New Here

Carpentersville, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi! Everyone!
I'm new here, I just happened on this site browsing the web. I like to garden inside and out. :)
I currently grow orchids and av's which I'm just getting into. I had grown them on and off over the years. My sister in law just gave me 4 plants. No blooms yet, so that will be fun to see what they turn out to be. They are just noids though. And I just received an order from ebay for leaves. 25 of them. And so they are all potted up and I can't wait to have babies.
So I hope to meet alot of you on here and hope to be able to join in on the fun.

Thanks so much!
Leslie

Welcome Leslie. I love to garden in and out too. My hubby and I have orchids. I think a lot of us here do!

African Violets are fun and the "cousin's" like Chirita's etc are great also.

So happy you are here! This is a BUSY forum! You will like it here. Show us your plants and tell us where they are growing. We love pictures!

Have a great day!

Hello and welcome aboard the fun train!!! Check out some of the threads and join us in growing african violet trailers the Japanese way...........look at your stuck leaves and see if you have a trailer (any size) miniature, semi mini or standard among them.

If you don't, holler and we will find you one.

I think many of us garden both inside and outside, but in the summer heat we have had it has mostly been indoors........

My orchids outside look horrible but those inside and under gro lights (the catts) are doing great.

Hello, Leslie and Bbon!

Quite new on this forum as well, but the people are very nice, and I think we'll have lots of fun! I'm Alexandra, I kill a lot of plants here in desert El Paso. Usually serial killings...

Hello and welcome aboard Bbon!

Growing in El Paso would be a challenge without good air conditioning or the coolers which pull air over water. I can't think of what they are called. We had them in Las Cruces when I went to school there one time.

Carpentersville, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks so much for the great welcome!

Williston, ND

think they are called swamp coolers

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

How did you know that living in the north? I couldn't remember.

Williston, ND

i know many things gail, and who said ive lived here my whole life,i havent ,lived all over, lol, parents moved a bunch,

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No one but someone from the dry arid part of the country would remember that bit of trivia. You must have moved around the world a lot!! I can remember going with my grandparents in the summer to Pecos, Texas where they had a farm. In this little bunk house where we stayed, they had this kind of cooling. I was fascinated as I had never seen it.

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

My husband built me a little greenhouse years ago with the drip pads (that's what I call them, but I think there is another name). It really keep the greenhouse pretty cool and I used it so I could grow the cooler growing orchids in Florida. I forget what material he used for the pads but it was not very expensive and fastened across the back of the greenhouse and then he rigged up a drip system at the top of the pads and used an old sump pump and a garbage can for the water to recycle out of. I don't have that system anymore but it was very nice.

Yep, swamp cooler, or, if fancier words to be used, evaporation AC. Great for providing some degree of humidity during the hot months. Unfortunately, with limits in cooling... I don't know too much about this, as I've been in El Paso for just one year now, but it depends on the temperature and humidity outside. As luck would have it, in the summer we have the monsoon season, with some humidity and (if lucky) some rain. So we feel quite well the limits of this AC. For example, if outside it's over 100F, inside I cannot lower the temp more than 85F. That's how I've been living for the last couple of months.

Winter is not bad, but the air is so much dryer then. The heating unit dries the air additionally. So I have a humidifier for the plant room, that runs from fall to late spring.

(sorry for my delayed answer, had been gone running errands for a few days)

How far from potted leaves do position the grown light? do you keep them watered..I have a dome top. I have two florescent lights ...above them..but how far?
Thanks for answering...

Also, is the reason my other AV's are pointing up lack of enough light? It is the same window that the original three AV's I received did so well last year. Nothing changed.
so I am baffled.

Thanks for any help...

bbon, while the leaves are rooting, the light should not be too bright, in fact, I kept mine in lower light until the babies appeared, then gradually moved them into brighter light, approx 12 to 15 inches below the lights.

It is good to keep them domed, the extra humidity is helpful, and doming them means you will have to water less. I'd still check them every few days, and water if necessary. Just keep them damp, not soaking wet.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

To address your other question, leaves pointing up is often a lack of light. Maybe a tree or bush outside has gotten taller? There can be other reasons, but if they are healthy and blooming I wouldn't worry too much.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am listening, too. I didn't know that starting av leaves means they don't need much light. I learn something new every time I get on Dave's Garden............good to know............

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

I didn't know about leaves either. I was putting them with my other plants. Guess I have to reorganize!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am still keeping them under my gro lights unless I run out of space completely.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I just grow them anywhere there is space.Sometimes on the ends of the shelves and sometimes in the middle, sometimes near a sunny window, but I don't normally dome them.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - on the shelves in your kitchen would work too, unless you can't get Kitty to share!

Kitty at the spa! LOL!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I cannot believe, Nichole, that you took a picture of Tigger in her favorite spot where it is warm............the lights are attached under each shelf!! You are so funny!!!!

Good idea about the leaves..........maybe Tigger won't sleep there if I put trays of leaves in her place.......

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, you don't need to use "her" shelf . . . you could use the others for the leaves . . .

Did I mention that cows are anti-social? And they stare at you!

(sorry to get a little OT here!)

Here I am with my hubby's parents Herford's. My hubby likes to go to the property about once a week. He has deer feeders and outside camera's there to take care of. Trudy and I went with him once on the way to Boerne. Trudy is NOT a fan of cattle, ha. She is afraid, but they are nice and tame. Very pretty too.

Oh Nichole, that kitty picture is great!! Are the cows Gail's ??
Cute picture Sally!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Lynn - I believe the cows (which are - I think - from India) belong to her brother . . .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My brother had to sell all the Herfords because of the heat. This old Brahmas were bred in India and don't even bother to look for shade like the Herfords do.............

I will try and go down to the pastures where he breeds deer.............what a sight as he has 24 new fawns this year.........will take pictures of them. The grandchildren love to ride anything they are allowed to drive!!

This is from a couple of years ago.......and now they all know how how to drive the 'gator'.
Actually this was last summer..........
Oldest daughter and her kids.....
