I was hoping some of you would share your favorite gooseberry and currant recipes??? I'd love to try some new ones :-) I asked on the fruit and nut forum too but got no responses. By the way, I am new to this forum so hello to all . I just bought a 170 year old farm house, planted a large garden, started planting an orchard, ordered some chickens....On my property there is already a large amount of currant and gooseberry bushes as well as some mature apple trees and a large concord grape vine. I am very excited about slowly becoming as self sufficient as possible and you will probably see me on this forum often

Welcome! I'm sorry I don't have any favorite recipes, but can't you use the dried currants like raisins? So anything a raisin would go in, a currant will work in... like scones. I love scones. =0)
Any particular type of currant or gooseberry recipe you have in mind?
Wow,congratulations on your new place, and welcome to the Homesteading forums! It sounds like you jumped in with both feet too :) We may not see that much of you with all that workload you've got...LOL!
If Darius is around, she might can pass on currant recipes as she's growing a couple of different kinds. I only use dried currants, and I used them soaked and then in quick breads and muffins and stuff in place of raisins, or along with raisins and cranberries if I'm feeling more fruity on that baking day. I've not used gooseberries, although I have some seeds to plant when I finally land somewhere permanently!
red currant and I'm not sure on the type of gooseberry I have. they get a dark purplish color when they're ripe. I never thought to use the currants like raisins...I think I'll try to dry some.

I'm trying for a place right now, but I'm quite limited financially and due to my loan type only certain types of properties will pass underwriting.
I follow a blog of a woman homesteader in Canada - she's doing really well and is very inspirational. It's called Howling Duck Ranch.
So how long have you been there? What is your most favorite memory yet, and your biggest advice you'd give for someone taking the leap?
thanks Hineni, I've been here since the beginning of July. I think my fav memory so far is just the moment, after 3 days of hectic moving when it sunk in for the first time that this was MY HOUSE. very nice feeling.
I was also very limited to what types of house (and price) do to my loan. For almost 6 months I looked and kept finding nice places that I could live with but were not perfect. Then, by chance, I drove past this one one day when it was open house. It didn't fit my criteria cuz I was looking for 5 acres and up and it only had 3 but as soon as I walked in I just new that this was the one.
My advice is hold out for the perfect place, a little bit of waiting is verry minor compared to the knowledge that you could never find a more perfect place for you.

Due to the tax credit coming out this year and having to buy and close before 11/30/09 - I don't have six months. I'm praying that the best place for me will show up in time.
