We have two sugar pear trees that are bearing for the first time. A couple of them have started to show a pink blush and we are wondering when we should pick them. They are still rock hard. Do we leave them on the trees until they begin to soften?
Thanks for your help.

Sugar Pear - When Ripe?
I can answer your question completely but I think it also depends on if you wish to get them before the squirrels and other critters or not. I also think pears will ripen after they are picked but not sure.
Are those Sekel pears?
Pears should be picked before they are fully ripened, and judging the best time is tricky, depending on the variety. I am not personally familiar with Sekels.
They do ripen off the tree.
I beleive Eurpeon pears should be picked hard and refrigerated to ripen. (about 4 wks. I have been told) I have four varieties of Asian pears and these are tree ripened so I am not absolutely sure about your "sugar pears".
Oh dear, I asked my sister and all she could remember was "sugar pear". I will do some research and see if I can find out the correct identity. Thanks for the info you provided. I appreciate it. :)
