Ugliest Rooster

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Is this the ugliest chicken you've ever seen or what?!

We got him in a batch of day old chicks from Ideal Poultry about a year and a half ago. For a long time we didn't know he was a rooster until we heard him crow among the hens! That's why we call him Covert!

He can't walk in a straight line but he knows what to do with the ladies! And no one really picks on him unless he picks on them. He never looks any better or any worse.

Just thought I'd give you a laugh!

Oh my! What is he supposed to be? Do you think he knows how strange he looks?

Lodi, United States

You win! I wonder if there is a contest somewhere?

Lodi, United States

It looks like some sort of frizzle naked neck.....

Clarkson, KY

That reddish skin going all the way down his front like that is pretty spectacular. Gotta wonder what kind of weird mutation that is...

Conroe, TX

Looks like something gone wrong....way wrong. poor thing.

Denver, CO

Oh that poor thing. And chickens have such a sense of dignity. Yesterday we were sitting outside eating dinner, and the dog snapped at one of the girls, because they came too close to my dh. She sulked for about 2 hours, and wouldn't come near us. Her feelings were obviously hurt. It was only blueberries that got her out of her funk.

How does that rooster get along with the other chickens? Does he have a sense of inner beauty?

Richmond, TX

"Sense of inner beauty" I love it!

Clarkson, KY

I am sure his beauty is "inner" in nature...and he has to sense it to stand as tall as he does.

Thanks, Carol, for the amazing pic!!

Conroe, TX

I guess he is comfortable with his appearance. Of course unless you mounted a mirror in the pen he has no idea how bad he looks. Unless the girls have told him.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Oh Oh I thought it was a stuffed one until I looked harder...
Glad you kept him and gave him a chance...

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm glad everyone is enjoying Covert! He is real--not stuffed! And I'm sure he has no idea how he looks. Someone said he might have a double frizzle gene and the second gene is what makes his feathers brittle and break off. We have one other rooster (Mephistophlez!) who is mean and chases after naked legs if he gets a chance, but Covert has never attacked us.

Probably not good breeding stock but he is interesting.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I showed Billy Covert.. (No Disrespect intended, he is 3) He started laughing and said he was a pink rooster.. Now he wants one... LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I wonder if he is the result of a frizzle NN bred to another frizzle. They say that frizzle to frizzle results in very limited feathers on frizzle babies from that cross. I wonder...

He's cute in his own way though!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh I love him! He is perfect! Thank you for sharing that pic..

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Man hes Ugly LOL ---Paul

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Ya....that whole beauty in the eye of the beholder thing...not workin with him.
I am sure he makes up for it in his personality though. LOL
Great pic!! Thanks for the laugh. hehehehe

Clarkson, KY

It certainly takes a special beholder...

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Ugliest rooster? You got that right! Whew! :-P LOL .....Poor thing.

Ferndale, WA

Paul was right!!! Just a simple "Man he's ugly" say's it all.

You guy's are just funny, Sorry carol, but that bird should be outlawed. Or maybe used for target practice.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

We had one that looked just like your roo. He was a frizzle too and for some reason spent most of the time partially feathered..

Richmond, TX

Be careful, the look might become popular. No accounting for some people's taste. consider the Chinese Crested dog for example.

(Zone 6b)

I think he has a very regal look to him, and probably very entertaining to watch too.

You all better be nice!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah.. I can see it now.. the ugliest rooster contest.. National coverage! Count me in.. I love him! Needs a # 40 sunscreen lotion I'd guess. LOL

Hey.. saves on soap.. I mean you don't have to get every single feather clean!

Really.. I think he's great. I'd have a big huge coop for him right next door to Chuckie!

Gotcha Haystack!
