I want to build another raised bed for fall planting. I have landscaping cloth, but I don't trust it to smother the grass properly. I know people use like 20 layers of newspaper to line raised beds- is there any reason I couldn't use cardboard the same way? I have lots of it, and it seems like it would be easier than all those layers of newspaper.

I've used cardboard many a time. In fact I prefer it to newspaper.

Cardboard works wonderfully! I trust it more than newspaper to smother the agressive world here. I agree---go for it!
BTW, for anyone who is considering making a new garden/path etc and wants cardboard, I always have a huge surplus....you pick up, you can have as much as you need. We run an autobody shop in Federal Way, and almost all of our parts come in cardboard boxes. We have a van out back that we fill and then recycle (get almost a ton ever four months or so), but I have used it in several of my gardens as well. My cardboard well should never run dry.....
Woot! I figured it would be fine, but all I ever see is people saying to use newspaper, which I never have any of.
Next step: Hit craigslist for free rocks/cement! :D
I think that people use newspaper because it is easier to dig back down through....if you are only filling the garden a few inches and then having to plant a gallon size plant, cardboard is going to be a bugger.
Ah- yeah, that makes sense. I build my raised beds nice and deep, so that won't be an issue.
Now I'm daydreaming of all the bulbs I want... Mmm...
Did you look at the Co-op forum? There are a couple of bulb co ops going on. I might order some daffs and alliums.
