I have caught a blind snake. My two boys (2 & 4) found it near an ant bed.
Back in April a lady named Kathy told me if I find another one to let her know b/c her husband works at the Abilene Zoo and would want it. Does anyone know her? Or know anyone at the Abilene Zoo I could contact? She said they wanted it for an exhibit. I'd like to give it to them but I don't know how to go about finding out how? She was a member back in April but I'm not sure if she still is!!
Can anyone help me? I don't want it to die.
Thanks, Elizabeth

Here's a list of DG-ers in the Abilene area.. Does any of their names look right?

I found the thread and the member's name is Filaluvr

Ok, she's not a subscriber anymore, but if you send her a dmail, the system will e-mail her to come back and get it. ("Just" members can get dmails, too.) Hopefully you'll hear back from her soon!
That was so nice of you ladies to help, DG people are the Best!!!
Thanks Everyone!!
That's her and I did d-mail her. I hope she gets back to me, I don't want this little thing to die. I'll give her a few days and I guess I'll let it go.
I did go to the Abilene Zoo site and emailed them- maybe if they want it they can let me know.
It's a tiny snake. About 7-8 cm. Kinda like a worm. It's head looks like a snake and it's tiny tongue flickers. I hope it doesn't die in the mean time. I've got no idea how to care for it. I put some soil in the container.
Thanks again for all your help!!
Elizabeth
ejennings, in the thread posted above, I found a post that tells how to keep it until they can come get it (if they want it). It is posted by Filaluvr, April 19, 2009, 12:01 AM Here is (I think) the direct link to the post:

Ok- I put some water in a container with it, but not on paper towel. I will try that.
I wonder if I tried to call the Abilene Zoo, if I could find someone since that lady isn't a member anymore? I tried emailing the zoo but with no response.
Am I crazy for trying so hard or should I just let it go?
Thanks again everyone!! Elizabeth
I think it's very kind of you to try so hard, Elizabeth. :-)
If it were me, I would let the snake go if you haven't heard from them by this afternoon. No sense making the snake suffer if they aren't going to return your email. Then if they do get back to you and are interested, have them give you a way to contact them that they will answer in a timely fashion when you find another one, and get them to give you some care instructions for it while you wait for them to get it.
Elizabeth, why not give them a call?

I appreciate the advice- I feel better about my decision about letting him go either tonite or in morning.
Pennzer- Thanks for the number of the zoo. I called and talked to a man Max something. He said he would get back with me. It's been hour and a half. If I don't hear from them by morning I'm letting him go.
I don't want it to die. My goodness to be so small and live to be full grown at that it deserves to live!!

Elizabeth, take a pic to share with us. Good idea to free the little creature if you don't hear from the zoo.
Oh, this is so funny. Note that screech owls sometimes kidnap the little snakes and make them housekeepers!
OMG- is that really true about the owls??
I did get a phone call back and they are coming this evening to pick the fella up. He will be in an exhibit there at the zoo. How exciting!
Last nite he got out of his container. I was so heartbroken and worried. I was scared one of my dogs or boys could find it and kill it. We tore the armoire that he was on( where computer is) apart. Finally I found him behind the printer-STUCK to electrical tape. He is so small that there was no way to pull him off. I was scared we had lost him. His little head was stuck to the tape under its chin. The only part of him not stuck was the tip of his tail. I used a q-tip with cooking oil and gently rubbed him all over and he started loosening up off the tape. He became very active, as if to say "thank you"
I did take a picture, but it will be a few days before I can put the picture on computer.
thanks for all the help and advice. I'll let you know how it goes when they get here:)

Elizabeth, your snake capers are very entertaining! I'm pleased to hear that you found and saved the escaped snake and that the zoo has a place for the little guy.
I copied and pasted the info about the screech owls kidnapping these snakes, but I see it didn't copy. Here is a link....

How funny and clever! Thanks for that tidbit.
Kathy came and got the snake earlier. I think I kinda miss it- afterall I did save its little life. I got used to checking on it.
EJ, we'll get the word out that you are an available foster mother for orphaned blind worm snakes. They eat ant and termite larvae, so not a bad critter to have around. Just ask the screech owls. :)
Come to find out- they do get in people's homes. But when they see them they assume they are worms. I guess they are after the ants and all in your house!!.
When I was a kid in AL my father got us 3 rat snake eggs. We hatched them. Fed them pinkies(baby mice). We let them go after a few months. I can remember how cool it was when they started to hatch. I was maybe 5-6 and still remember that:)
Gee, and I thought it was cool to watch guppies give live birth. You had a much more exciting childhood than I.
I could say the same about you! I've never watched a fish give birth. I want some fish now but scared to try.
Your boys would love having an aquarium, but it is so sad when a fish dies (and the more exotic ones seem to do that pretty regularly). Maybe just get them a couple of gold fish for starters.
