I'm new this year to bird feeding and am having great success in attracting a variety of "desirable" birds. Starting yesterday, a crackle has shown up on the wall where I scatter mixed seeds for cardinals, nuthatchs, tufted titmouses, etc. One is fine but am I courting disaster? We're in a woodland setting with countless tall oaks, gums, etc. Don't want to wake up to a black cloud of nesting crackles. Any advice?
one crackle: to worry or not to worry?
i've found that you are always going to get an "unwanted" bird from time to time. if you strictly use black sunflower seeds, you will still get most of the birds you want but Grackles don't like them.
Grackle -- I knew that! Thanks for the tip. I have a black sunflower, striped sunflower, and safflower mix. I'll switch to just black if many more show up!
i would think those would all be ok. the nuisance birds usually like more of a regular seed mix. they can't crack the sunflowers the way the cardinals, etc. can. you may have just seen a scout. i think they check out different areas to see if the pickings are good and if they are, they send the word out!
