H lauterbachii

Teguise, Spain

Does H lauterbachii need more heat than other Eriostemmas? I'v been plodding on with this species for 3 years, and still I cant get it past a few leaves. Ive had a spare plant ( were talking 4 leaves here, not a real plant.:)) ) in direct sun outside the shadehouse and all it did was scorch the leaves. I was expecting new growth to be acclimatized to the sun, but the new leaves are not looking good either...Whats the secret ?

I have mine inside screened front entry facing west. My plant is huge but no flowers yet but it'll flower eventually.
The tall one in the photo is lauterbachii, I let it almost dry out before watering again. I think Carol said the lauterbachii needs room for the roots so I put it in a larger clay pot.

I don't have lauterbachii so don't know anything about growing it, but I've seen pictures of those huge blooms that are absolutely amazing!

Yes, I am waiting patiently for flowers on this plant.
Carol, any idea how to make it flower faster?

The only H. lauterbachii I have seen in bloom are in my garden and at Ted Greens. They have grown UP (for a couple of years) and then suddenly, as the vine was hanging down, it bloomed. If you can let it climb and climb and climb, it will eventually turn downwards and bloom.

From time to time I have had Eriostemmas bloom in the pot on a trellis... Mostly cv. Ruthie. These are wild wild wild.... I wouldn't keep them in too big a pot...they are terrestial...but dig into crevices and spots....

Mine is two years old and grows well in a west-facing window, but the leaves are smaller than I would expect. It does grow likea fiend; and if I take a cutting it throws out a new shoot. I think I'll pot it up and see if that helps the leaf size. I do let it dry out between waterings, and mist it every day.

Flowers ... yeah, right ... in Canada ... hmm, maybe if I moved it to guppyi's south-facing window...lol.

Like all the eriostemmas, it takes full sun really well and they really want to climb. It is the warmth and lite that will help them bloom...but, in my book, H. lauterbachii is the slowest to bloom.

Its getting it from under the shade cloth to out in the sun thats proving a bit difficult Carol...The plants just seem to burn when exposed to the sun

Hmmmm. your sun must be really really strong!!!!

North Augusta, ON

From what I've read and seen Spain is apparently the sunniest place there is...strong sun...

Im a lot further south than Spain, off the west coast of Africa, so it is strong, but not that strong ....but, Plan 2 is going into action....I might have to acclimatize the young plant more slowly......maybe Im rushing it a bit. Im looking forward to the day I have endless meters of plants to experiment with, so it dosent matter if you loose a bit...as it is, with ones like the lauterbachii, I only have 3 small plants left..........:)) Ill get there....Im an optimist !!
