Yesterday I saw a bird in the willow thicket that I've not seen before. It was about goldfinch size and shape, but the head was completely irridescent red like some of the hummers. While I never could see the bird completely in good lighting, I did get a good view of the beak, and that too, was like a goldfinch. What did I see?
What was that bird?
Thanks, I considered that, (purple here, not house) but I thought the bird appeared a bit smaller and with a with a thinner beak. Who knows? The sun and shadows do play tricks with our vision.
I did see it fly into the thicket, though, and it didn't display the usual finch flight pattern.
Maybe a Western Tanager, if you under-estimated its size?
