this rice paper plant keeps amazing me. The top dies back but a trunk has developed and every year it gets taller and taller. This is zone 8a and I would have thought with the cold and snow it would not survive above ground. Read about a variegated one, which I would love to try. Haven't seen it listed anywhere. Anyone know who has them?
I forgot to say it is about 12-15 ft. tall.

My mom grows these in Delaware (7A). They die back every winter, but come back a hellin' every spring/summer. They don't get that tall though, and don't retain their previous year's trunks. I've snagged a couple of the babies from her to add to my yard as well, and they're still getting established.
Perhaps check Plant Delights Nursery online (plantdelights.com) and see if they carry a variegated version. I bought her's from there, but they're the solid green leafy ones.
