Guess who I am???-ginger pic
Alpinia japonica "Extra spicy" is one of my favorite Alpinia. I am hoping to cross it with Alpinia rugosa or Alpinia intermedia "Sunspice" next year. I've grown "Extra spicy" since 2004 when Tim Chapman and I imported some together and it has proven very hardy. I have tried it in a few locations and I find it like mostly shade, with the Louisiana sun hitting it even it part sun it simply "dies".
Yup that is it.. Mine will be in shade..
I do have one of those, it's still at your house.
LOL....ya think???
another good find don't ya just love it lol
YUP!!..lol
Nadine, is this one Sunspice or Extra Spicy? I have it in the ground and have a burned wooden marker that has Extra Spicy on it and want to make sure I am right.
I think it is a new sport of the old Variegated Shell.
Here is a pic of a bloom on Alpinia japonica. I crossed it with Alpinia rugosa this year and it is just beginning to ripen now.

Thank you.
My plant tag and the written words says Alpinia 'Sunspice'. It doesnot have that word Extra Spicy anywhere on the tag or pot..
Keep us in touch with your project, Scott. cool flower!
Moodene, it must be the lighting in the photo that has it looking more like Extra spicy. I have found that my variegated A. intermedia is quite hardy and has been a consistent bloomer.
Thanks for the info!
