several people have asked to see pictures of the Hosta hybrids that I'm growing, here goes!
pictures of hybrids
I like that one!
Willowwind, thanks for your support, I will post more when my photos are current. but I might throw in some as seedlings. when I start putting names on the plants, will help. a lot were Open Pollinated others were not. I will try to get it right. also plant labels get lost in the winter freezing and thawing, some labels get lost in the winter when raking leaves. I think the squirrels use them in their in their nests. I just received a good tip from hybridizer to make 2 labels bury one, and leave the other in front of the plant. well I better get busy with my camera. one I would like to photo today has purple petioles with dark green serated leaf edge. Jim
Hi Jim, I just saw this thread. I'd love to see more of your pictures, too. This one you just posted is very interesting. Twisty, light green, and then the red petioles....
Very nice! I really like the red stems! I would love to see more pics as well. I had tried to collect hosta seeds a year or so ago, and they were all just like paper. I figured that they were like marigold seeds and if they didn't "snap" when you bent them, they were not fully developed. Any input?
Rarejem. thanks, I'm working on it, Jim
My Great Expectation has huge seed pods on it. Now what do I do?
Ooh that's a very pretty hosta. I miss my hostas so much. Had to leave them behind when we moved, and I have pretty much zero shade here to grow them in.
Hosta, that's lovely! I thought I was looking at a blossom - I love the slender leaves, and the blush of pink (can you have a blush other than pink - a blush of blue just doesn't sound quite right?) at the base is stunning.
Look forward to more.
Lauri1, I have several with red, purple, pink. I'll send more this afternoon if I can figure out how I did it. I keep forgetting the steps. after I do it a few times I'll post them regularly. I did a photo shoot 2 days ago. and will do more later this week. I've been posting like crazy on Hostapix if you want to check it out. also, I stopped at Mary's ( Tillys-- )garden, she has a very nice shade garden, several nice hosta, and in the sun a collection of Iris, one weeping Salix with some very unusual leaves, she gave me a rooted start of it. and she gave me some plants that you gave her the seed, I believe. one is a Hellebore, I can't wait to see it bloom in a few seasons. Jim
Jim, I just found this tread OOOO so cool and so glad you are posting pics. Can't wait to see more. But most to see how you do it, get the seeds I mean???
I'm glad you came out to my place, wish we had more time. I love the Hosta you gave me. Been out looking for the right place to put it. Think I found it, close too the Blue Cadet and the two I got from you when we visited you. The Slugs have been a big problem with all mine.
Get that Babie Hell out of the pot and into the ground or a bigger one, I have lost a few by not doing that when I should have LOL they like to go deep with them roots.
Oh I like your friend he was real nice.
