Banana

Longboat Key, FL

Now I have to get ready for eating bananas correctly.

Fourteen months ago a friend sadistically gave me a sprig of a banana plant. I was really asking for some bananas to eat, but he thought that this would be a more generous move.

With some trepidation I planted it in the edge of my succulents patch.

It grew -- and grew -- and grew -- and fostered many offspring , which started taking over the lot. I finally gave in and allowed the offspring to be stripped away -- and, lo and behold -- a flower bud had already emerged from the now lonesome mother plant.

I am going to have to leave it to fend for itself while I am north for awhile, but I want to be prepared for the harvest. I understand that the fruit are not going to be imminently available -- but I want to make certain that I am ready when they are.

Now I understand that monkeys know how to peel the banana so that there are no strings remaining from the peel -- that is, from the bottom up. But is there anyone out there in DG-land who has a better solution and recipe?

I know that this forum is for DGers who are offering intelligence -- I am looking for some.
