Is this a naked lady?

This is a lone bloom no foliage. It appeared in a shady area were I planted lycoris squamigera (sp?) eons ago. This would be the first bloom ever.

I have some other lycoris squamigera (sp?) in a sunny location and they bloomed last year, not yet this year. Also, they don't look the the one in this pic.

thanks for your help

Yes it looks like amaryllis belladonna to me. It's lovely.

thank you. I need to ck my journals, but I planted these bulbs at least 5 yrs ago. All this time the area has been rather bare and I was seriously thinking about giving up and just planting something else right on top. It's like the belladonas could read my mind and have decided to get with it, lol.

Yes that must have given it the signal to bloom or die! I'm glad you saved it.

The bulb has to be a decent size to bloom. I would have thought that a shady spot could be encourage it to flower. they do prefer sun. I have seen a wonderful picture of them on the slopes of Table Mountain after a fire. There were thousands.

They are one of my favorite summer flowers - with their light, and delicate scent. They do take a while to bloom after transplanting, but will bloom regularly once they do. I always tell people who I give bulbs to to have patience and not to expect flowers for a few years. sometimes they do bloom the next year, sometimes not for 4 years. I have them in sun, shade, part shade, etc. so that they will be staggered in bloom time. This patch is fairly shaded under a cherry tree, and is the third of my patches to bloom.

Sandsoilup those are really lovely. I havn't got the hang of sending pictures yet. I have some quite nice ones. Part of my problem, my pictures are just too muddled up and need some sorting and naming.

Thanks, Keriblu. Actually, posting pictures on DG gave me the incentive to organize my photos. I have my garden photos split into seasons and year (summer 2009, etc) , and then the ones that I want to post, I copy them to a separate folder called DG, and within that, another set of folders of forums. So, while I am organizing my garden photos, I do my other subjects too.

I used to be sooo good organizing my photo albums, never a stranded envelope full of pics. When I got my digi, that stopped. I have thousands of pics and it's a humongous virtual mess! I do name the file by dates, but after 6 months go by, I can't really remember what's in the Feb. 22 2009 file, unless I go file by file, a big pain.
