"Evening Glow"

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

I usally have blooms out to show when people come over. The usual response is thats nice. There are a few that get the "wow" response and " Evening Glow" is one of them. It actually put me in a better mood today when I went outside.

Wow is right! How big is that bloom?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

It mesure's 8 across and that is about the average size of the blooms I have gotten from it.

now that is one awesome bloom! what are the temps out there now Jon? just wondering if you're having mild temps to help get such a fabulous bloom?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks.... The temps lately have been in the mid 80s during the day and in the 60s at night. I also grow in a shade house with 40% cloth.

Nice blooms Jon. Those are pretty good temperatures to work with. I would love some nights in the 60's. We have to wait another 3 months to see that happen here.

Huber Heights , OH(Zone 5b)

Nice blooms Jon, we have had weather in the 70's during the day here and in the 50's at night. it is suppose to warm up within the next week, we have had the coolest July that I can ever remember. Plants are lovin it everything is growing, and our other plants are filling out. It's jsut to bad with in 3 months it will all have to come in the house. (hope we have enough room)

my wife likes your "Evening Glow" she has added it to her list!!

Thanks Jon and Patrick

Jon

It will be the opposite here with the colder nights in a few months. I'm going to line the inside of my shade house to warm it up a bit for the winter. Hopefully it all works out and I will have more blooms year round.

Patrick

Evening Glow is a great.. looking bloom but it does have a bit thinner texture and the blooms can close up pretty quick in the heat. Even with its minor flaws it is definitely one of my favourites.
I'm not sure if you have the space but a small greenhouse could easily be built on the weekends in a few months.

Huber Heights , OH(Zone 5b)

we want to get a greenhouse, I don't know if we will do it here in Ohio or wait until we get to Florida. Right now we have about 115 hibiscus, and about 160 coleus that we want to overwinter. Plus a few other plants that we started from seed this year. The hibiscus are the ones that will make it in for sure. Last year I made did a spot in the garage and it did ok, but it got down below 0 a few times, I don't know what this winter is going to be like, if it is anything like this month we are going to have a cold one.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow Patrick.. That is is Hibiscus dedication... It must be really rewarding in the spring when you take them out. Are you able to keep some in a sunny window inside ? If so how do you decide which ones.

Disputanta, VA(Zone 7a)

sorry if I'm not understanding but did you overwinter your plants in the garage Patrick? If so, did they all make it? How about problems with pests?

Jon, how easy & expensive would it be to build that small greenhouse? I'm thinking about doing something but not sure what I can accomplish by myself & the expense is a bit much at one time. But losing all my new plants would be pretty costly to replace. (what to do, what to do...)

Huber Heights , OH(Zone 5b)

no we put everything in our dining room and put up extra lights, and we used one of the bedrooms upstairs for some of the plants to get extra sunlight, we did make a small area in the garage for some of the other plants we wanted to save, we kept periwinkles out there so we could collect the seeds from them, I kept crepe myrtles, and a red tip out there. All of the hibiscus and colues that we had last year was all kept inside the house. This year is going to be different. last year I think we only had maybe 25 hisbiscus, and 10 to 15 coleus. Like I said so far this year we have 115+ hibiscus and 160+ coleus that we want to overwinter. I hate to see all that money go down the drain when it get cold. I know we have 12 more hibiscus coming from Tried and True, it is hard to pass up when he has his $5.00 specials. And in November when we make a trip to Flroida I think we have a list of 12 or more to buy from them when we are down there.
And my wife loves going to Baker's Acres, last weekend we came home with 16 more coleus, he has them on sale for 2.49 each. and there is a few more that she wants to order this year from Gebhart Nursery. I think that she is more addicted than I am.

Ok, that looks a little familiar. lol At this point I have a very small sun room I can use & a garage for those that can get a little colder with out dying. I wonder what's the coldest they can get if I kept them in the garage? I can park outside this winter if I need to. :-(

Point being I need to start getting ready now for all the many tropical additions I've made this year.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Yikes. Going from 25 hibiscus to more than 115!!! That's going to be a struggle I would think.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm with Jon.. Yikes Patrick.. You could go to a hydroponics store and buy a few 1000 watt lights and have a hibiscus jungle in your house..

I do not have the best advice on building a green house. My project is alomost done and I way underestimated the amount of wood for the size structure I built. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the neighbors do not call the city to see if I have a permit. If I had to do it over I think I would use rebar and make a simple round dome and cover plasic over it. I have seen a few built like that and it looks far easier.
