Mock Orange "Innocense", yes or no?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I bought this as MO Innocense, but after looking in the PF, it appears this cultivar s/b variegated. Mine is not. Comments, please, thanks.

Flowers are fragrant, but mildly so. Maybe it will make more of a scent statement when it is a full flowering shrub.

Nery - I posted a pic of the MO that I'd purchased from Bluestone http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/PHINP.html last year as 'Innocence' http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1008763/ Mine is not variegated either. The fragrance was pleasant but mild on mine...once more blooms opened it was more apparently but still not in the gardenia league....
Hmmm....seems all the sites are referring to it as variegated....
Anyone else purchase one of Bluestone's - if yes, are YOUR leaves variegated?

oh, good, then all green: 1 var: 0.

Hiya C, how are ya? My sweet almond verbena is perfuming the yard. We celebrated our wed. anniv. recently, so I put some SAB branches with my roses, and it is divine! There's probably other fragrant stuff out there, but I'm not getting out in the heat to find out, lol.

Ahh Nery - congrats!!! I still stand by my SAC having NO scent...so she was dug up and given away!! My sweet almond verbena hasn't bloomed yet...so I have to hear everyone else's descriptions...for now.
You need to get out there and take some pics to add to the new thread I started: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1017735/

I know this is an old thread but I just found it. I have a Mockorange 'Innocence' that is variegated and has a great fragrance. It isn't as strong as a lilac or hyacinth but it is strong enough to waft through the air. I bought it from Lazy S's in 2007. It was small but it has grown great.

The variegation is only on some of the new growth. As you can see, the new growth leaves are a bit jagged. But the leaves on the older growth is only lightly toothed and not variegated.

This picture shows the leaves on the older growth (not variegated) but you can still see one of the variegated leaves in the background.
And some white flowers too....

I like having only some of the new growth variegated. It adds an interest to the plant and makes me look twice.

Last picture. Again, in the background, you can see the larger, toothed, variegated leaves. Some of the leaves are variegated with white and others are yellow. It's really kinda cool.

thank you for your comments. I have to look up in my journal to refresh my memory re: where planted.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

update. my plant is blooming and leaves definitely not variegated.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

And let me add....mine is not either...and lacking in anything but an overly subtle scent....VERY disappointed!!!

I wonder if the scent and variegation go together. I have variegated leaves on new growth again this year and mine usually has a very strong, sweet scent--almost mouth-wateringly sweet. The buds should bloom this week. We have it by our path and hubby always stops to breathe deeply when he passes it in bloom.

Maybe it depends on the clone. I remember that the plants that Lazy S sent me were really small and I was disappointed overall. But they grew and their 'Innocence' really is (was) variegated.

I wish I knew how to propagate plants because I'd be happy to share. But I've never done anything like that and I kill houseplants.

Hiya C, wassup? Wouldn't you know the mock o. is making a liar out of me. This morning on my inspection/enjoyment stroll, I noticed my MO has a few variegated leaves. I also leaned over to smell and it was a delicious fragrance. I couldn't describe it better than "delicious". somebody should bottle it and sell it. It's gonna be something else when it is a big, big plant. I'm gonna post my orig. pic in the PF and comment about the unstable variegation. As Valrita suggests, it may have to do w/ prop. method.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I wanted to add I planted mine in a shady area that gets watered w/sprinkler. not too much but definitely steady moisture.

Yay. I love the smell too. Yummy. Is your variegation on the new growth only? Are the leaves of the variegated growth a different shape than others?

Mine is in full sun, average water, amended clay soil, no special fertilizers.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I'd say yes re: var. on new growth, but only b/c I noticed it recently. Had it been on older foliage, I think I would have seen it.

Well I'll have ta live through ya'lls till I can get my hands on some smelling good ones. Our Mid Atlantic swap is coming up and a friend's gonna bring some cuttings...now if only I can root them...LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C they're supposed to be extremely easy to root, though I haven't tried.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Chantell's ability to root hardwood and semi hardwood rates a F...seriously I'll keep that in mind though...LOL

Ok...maybe I stand "slightly" correctly....she's still not variegated but now that more blooms are open...well she smells kinda nice...still subtle but nice.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

this is to which I was referring as "variegation. Kind of a stretch....

LOL....that is a stretch maybe I should take a closer peeksee at mine too eh?

I would have had a tough time seeing that. My eyes aren't the greatest without my glasses. Do you think that the amount of sun might have something to do with it? Mine is in full sun all day.

Some of this year's variegation.

I live on the West Coast and was at a nursery over here today. I saw a mock orange in bloom and it was labelled Innocense. It had a Full Double Flower and was very Fragrant. We must have a different strain over here. I wish I had taken a picture of it, now that I found this thread. I'll be back there again next week and if it is still in bloom I'll take a picture. I don't think it was variegated. But I'll double check next week.

My very favorite Fragrant Mock Orange is: Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile'

It is a single flower but has a splotch of burgundy at the base of each petal and the smell is like the sweetest perfume. You only have to walk by it to get a whiff. ;-)
