Anyone know this plant?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

This is a picture basically from the top of this group of -- wildflowers? -- that is growing in the hen's yard (you can see my lovely little bantams, Miss Jane and Miss Elizabeth) so I suspect it's something from some kind of seed they didn't eat? Maybe? The closest thing I could find in the wildflower ID books (don't you hate spending an arm and a leg and they never have the flowers you're looking for?) was something called "steepleflower" which apparently doesn't grow down here so I don't know.

I'd like to know what it is before I pull it up and find out it's more valuable than plutonium, or leave it there and find it's deadly to chickens! Two more pictures coming.

Thanks!

And a real close-up. The leaves grow singly from a central stalk.
