Hello,
I recently had an amorphophallus bulbifer that flowered. When the flower died there was the usual stalk with all the little seeds on it. I am wondering now, since it has been about two months since the flowering and the seeds have started to fall off, what do I do now? I squished one of the seeds only to find that there is no seed inside, they just mush when you squish them. Should I plant them or just get rid of them. There is about twenty or so of the little balls.
thanks, Ben
Amorphophallus Question
Check each berry for seeds. If there are no seeds, no need to plant.
I think most Amorphophallus have to cross pollinate. The female flowers become receptive before the male flowers on the same plant begin to produce pollen.
I also heard that sometimes A. bulbifer sets apomictic seeds. That means the seeds are set without pollination. I had that happen with mine and a bunch of the berries had seeds which sprouted into little plants. So it does happen (I didn't pollinate it and I did not have any others blooming at the time either.
LariAnn
Thanks for the information. I will try to plant them.
Did the seeds turn red?
I had the same experience as Lariann, Mine bulbifer was in a pot, it's seeds dropped; I never did anything and the following season, I had several baby plants come up.
