I think it's a variety of acalypha, we call it 'petticoat' here.

Think that petticoat would have a chance in Dallas, Texas? I love it.

LouC, I have an Acalypha wilkesiana (Fairy Dust maybe) that I plant in the ground during the summer. In late fall, I put it back into a pot and move it into the greenhouse anytime that temps drop down into the 30s. It has done just fine.

1st plant is very cool looking. good garage find. 2nd plant white butterfly ginger - sweet and spicy smells. cut you a few stems and bring them in the house. Their fragrance will fill up your whole house.

I have some of the butterfly gingers in containers and want to put them in the yard. Can anyone tell me where is the best place and will they multiply and take over? I'm not especially good with gardening in the ground ... I have most things in containers, so your experience would be much appreciated.

Sorry for taking over your thread!

the butterfly ginger love the sun. I have them both in full sun and partial shades and the ones in full sun blooms like crazy. They never bloomed in the container for me. Yes, they will multiply, but you can dig out the tubers and give them away, like I do all the time. They do not need to be planted deep. If yours have never bloomed before, you will enjoy their sweet & slightly spicy fragrance and they attracts the bees. I planted them in a coner of my fence next to my cannas. They will get about 5-6 ft tall.

They will tend to wilt in the full afternoon sun but will recover in the early evening and a little water will perk them up right away.

Thanks ... Mine do bloom in my containers but I'm sure I'd get many more if they were in the ground. :-) Don't they smell just heavenly? ^_^
