Very nice plant! But var. runyonii?
Jordi
Yes.
Check out this link: http://www.coldcacti.com/product/New-385919031
The 5 photos in the plant files page of the short spined form are Coryphantha macromeris 'sunderlandii' for which there is a separate page for this. I'm having mine moved to that page.

Jordi,
I don't know where the name Coryphantha sunderlandii comes from. It must be in a book I don't have. Is C. sunderlandii in the "New Cactus lexicon" by Hunt? Do you have it?
I suspect that the epithet C. sunderlandii is a very old species name, or new.
Xeno.
Did YOU make up this page for the 'sunderlandii'?
This plant is the almost spineless cultivar of v. runyonii. I learned this name from Lazlo in Demming, NM. He said he named it after Mr. Sunderland in whose collection it occurred first. Miles Anderson calls it 'viola'.
No one of the experts, not Anderson, Hunt, Lüthy+Dicht nor Backeberg, mentioned this name ever before.
And regarding your photos of v. runyonii I must admit that I haven't seen this var in nature yet, but all the descriptions I read (and photos I saw) from the guys mentioned above don't fit easily to your plant. And I know Calplants is always good in making money out of cacti but I doubt their expertise in IDing them.
Jordi
Your right, this is not either of the macromeris subspecies, because the central spines aren't dark. Here's the close-up http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6867705
I guess Calplants has misidentified it also, whatever it is.
You wouldn't happen to have an idea as to what it is, would you?
I've been searching for this ID since 2005.
Xeno.
Here are photos of several diferent forms/varieties of C. macromeris.
Quite a variance within the species.
look at the 3rd photo down on this page, the spination resembles mine:

Xeno.
Right you are. But is it v. runyonii or v. macromeris? Daiv has lumped them. I think it is a tan spined v. macromeris.
Juergen
OK, I will go with that, and also put a notation in the caption about it.
Joan,
Please move my two photos on the C. macromeris ssp. runyonii page to the C. macromeris ssp. macromeris page.
Thanks.
Xeno.
They've been moved. Thanks, both of you, for working through this.
I just came across this thread as I was searching for the coryphantha sunderlandii. I am the daughter of Harry and Viola Sunderland, of the former Sunderland’s Cactus Gardens in Alamo, Texas. My mother, Viola, actually discovered this subspecies with the shorter spines while collecting native plants in the brush country of Starr County, Texas. After submitting it to experts in the field, the plant was later named after her, as “coryphantha sunderlandii.” I remember the day she found it. The plant was propagated and sold at their nursery for many years. The first photo shows what the flower looks like, but this particular plant, which was not the original has both longer and shorter spines. The middle photo was taken by my father, Harry Sunderland, Sr., showing the sunderlandii plant growing in his cactus gardens in 2007. The third photo shows a cluster grown from a sunderlandii I purchased from J&J Cactus & Succulents, of Midwest City, OK.
