Water lily taking over.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

My water lily is taking over my small pond. It is putting new shoots in the center this year.

Can you devide water lilies?

I'm not sure, but you have a beautiful pond setup! :)

Here is a short video on dividing water lilies. More info is available by a google search.

You will have to watch an Outback Steakhouse commercial before the video begins.

Marie,
Yes! You can divide waterlilies easily and if you need a place to send some of that water lily,
I would love to help take some of it off you hands. Trade or Postage?

Let me know if your interested?

OK I will keep you in mind when I divide it. I guess the fall is the best time like everything else.

I have successfully divided waterlilies in both the spring and the fall without any problems. Just make sure the divisions all have growth points, otherwise you won't get anything on your new divisions.

Just wanted to add that if you don't want to divide it now - you can remove a few of the outer leaves, it won't hurt the plant as long as you have plenty of strong, healthy ones left.

You may also want to consider (in the future) trading out your water lily for a smaller version. There are some that are minatures, and don't spread quite so large. I have a picture of one called "Tina" that is the cover pic for the thread called "the upside of ponding". There are also smaller plants that look like water lilies, like snowflakes, that can be used.

I divided up my water lily up mid summer last year. Nothing really hurts them as long as you get them back into the water quickly and not to do it in the hot mid-day sun.

I will keep all this in mind. Thank you everyone for the information.
MerryMary, it was small when I got it 4 years ago. The first year i did not htink it was going to live. Then the second year it grew some and now the 4th year it has decided, this is my pond....lol
