Why do stores (especially here in the South) even carry regular suet? I've bought some just twice when I had no choice and it is awful, melts all over. I stopped at Wal-Mart on the way home from work and thank goodness they had restocked their No-Melt suet and I got 8 packs. I dumped the melted one, which the Woodpeckers and other birds had barely touched and washed the feeder so I can put out a fresh one tomorrow. You see tons of the regular suet in the stores here. I can't even use it in the winter here, it still melts.
Suet
Wow, suet melting in the winter! Melbourne, FL sure is different from Melbourne, KY!! I don't know how their suet survives shipping! That stuff can go rancid, can't it?
Yes, I didn't even think of that...or maybe it has chemicals in it to prevent that. I just don't understand why they bother stocking it. The No-Melt is not much more expensive. I noticed that Wal-Mart sells it a lot cheaper than Petsmart, though. All Wal-Mart carries is the peanut flavor, but the birds like it.
We get ours cheapest at Southern States co-op.
Yes the regular suet can get rancid rather quickly in the hot temps.
Sorry I don't know why they carry that in Fla. but I have heard that many people prefer the regular over no melt in my area.
I would try and find another source for no melt suet, might take a little time on your part.
Will birds eat suet that has gone bad? If so, I wonder how much damage people may be doing to birds using it down here.
I believe so.
Poor birds! I would complain to the store and ask them to carry the good stuff from now on. Wouldn't hurt to ask.
You would think a store that caters to animals, like Petsmart would know better. No surprise that Wal-Mart carries regular suet. These stores carry Thistle seed all summer too, and the Goldfinches only are here during the winter. I have taken seed back to Petsmart after I got home and realized it had gone bad.
It's a shame you don't have a bird store near you.
I get my no-melt suet from Lowe's here in Columbus. I know theirs is $.50 cheaper than Petsmart - same brand.
Lowe's has Apple-flavored suet, Orange-flavored, Peanut flavored, Raisin, and something targeted for woodpeckers.
Lowe's also has a nice variety of seeds for my feeders.
Also has a variety of feeders.

Everybody is cheaper than Petsmart. Their bird food has gone sky high, so it just sits on their shelves and goes bad. My Lowes here carries regular suet, and not No-Melt.
GP, Why don't you ask a manager at Lowes if they can order No Melt Suet for you? They order plants for people so there is no reason why they couldn't do this.
Next time I go I'll ask....although Wal-Mart carries it and at a good price...they just occasionally run out.
