Trillium Seed pods

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

has anyone had experience of collecting trillium seeds? I have two enormous seed pods that I have been keeping my eye on, but I don't know when to harvest.

Anyone? Advice?

Laura1, I'll have to double check Ken Druse, Making More Plants, the art of propagation but I think that fresh seed will germinate faster than dried seed. although the % was low. Jim

hello Jim, long time. I'm hoping they will germinate - I've always heard that you need them to be fresh. But in the first instance, do you know when to pick the capsules? I've been assuming they will just open open up, and there will be these lovely seeds waiting to be sown. but they don't seem to be doing that. I'm wondering if the capsule is more of a fruit and I am going to have to excavate them.

Any guesses?

Many thanks hghmtn - that is helpful. It gave me a very good idea of what is inside the capsule. Good start.

Edited to add that I also found this which I thought was quite interesting.

And one more - you need to scroll down to the last article on the page, but it had some excellent advice on removing the seeds from the capsule flesh
