Beautiful!!..what a steal!!!..

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

I have two as well (plus the babies they're shooting off) that I bought from Plant Delights' open house in late Feb. They're beautiful! I think I paid about the same for them there, and recently saw them for $30 at another local nursery. Great find, BWard!

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

I found one at the farmers market last year for $15, I was stoked! Of course, I didn't protect it adequately and it barely made it through the winter. It's only about 6" tall now, oops. I promised to build it a cage of mulch this year.

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Please describe the cage of mulch.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

I have used the cage before on any plant like your tender bananas. 1. put four tall (I usually go 6') stakes around plant. 2. use burlap. You could use other material. 3. I staple burlap to stakes around the plant. 4. stuff with pine straw.or other loose material. I was always told not to pack too tightly. Easy, unless you have a large number of plants to protect. LOL Like most of us plant nuts trying to grow plants that should be grown in Miami.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

I was told by Todd at Plant Delights to do the same (but with leaf mulch vs. pine straw) for my thailand giant elephant ears to protect them over winter. I have 12 trees on a quarter acre, so leaf mulch won't be hard for me to find!

I also read on another thread that someone pureed up a whole banana (peel and all) for her banana plants once a month during the growing season. I don't recall what benefit that was supposed to have but I imagine it wouldn't hurt ... unless you add rum and make the tree a daiquiri! LOL

Saint Petersburg, FL

Hey Carolyn, we've been looking to add one to our colection too, where did you find yours??
Oh we live in St.Pete too, so if you got it locally let us know...gotta have it!!
thanks, Happy Gardening, Terry.

Terry,

I snagged mine down at Jene's Tropicals down on Central and 68th.

If you're a tropical fruit fan, that's the place to go.

I got mine at Home Depot (this one) but I have had one in the greenhouse for 2 years

The Big Box stores can sometimes have some good finds. The problem is they're extremely varaible depending who does their buying.

Gainesville, FL

All I can say is, this one was cheap, and is huge and sturdy with great color. The initial one I bought a few years ago online for $35 is scrawny, has always been scrawny even with the best care and never has had good color even in full sun. That's why I got another.

I want one. Maybe my HD will have some soon.

greg, if you're referring to the first pic in this thread, that is a Siam Ruby banana. At $16, a big score for such a beatiful plant.

Wow it is so cool. I have to have one. I cannot find any information here about them. Is that the name I should use to look the plant up ?
Thanks

Thanks allot for the link. Do you have one of these plants ?

my dear DG friend gave me one and it's not doing well. I may have started off watering too much. I also bought some seedlings in a coop and they're not thriving. However, I would not say it's a prima donna plant, I just haven't taken proper care of it. young bananas need much less water than we want to give them.

what I'm doing now is completely stopped watering, hoping the rhizome is still alive and perhaps it will start regrowth from them. Do I think it's a fine addition? It's a must! lol

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

This is an interesting product I will be using this winter for banana protection.
It is in pre-sale right now for Sept. It's just hitting the market.

Nery, so sad to hear RS is unhappy but have no fear, there are more where that came from. Maybe it was just too hot for shipping that week? How is the other one doing?

My Viente Cohol is not faring too well either. The directions that came with it said water when planting then not again until new growth appears. Of course, it has rained here every day since I planted it. Why oh why didn't I just dig it up and put it in a pot? I waited so many months for that one and here I am killing it.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Oh no, A, save the viente, save it! Since the ground is likely soft, you can probably pull it easily and still a pot. It will be a dirty deed, no doubt.

Fresno, CA(Zone 9a)

I had to have one. I found one fro Brians Botanicals.Have you herd of that place ? I had to order it and I have a verigated leaf canna coming from him too. I found these banana plants from Walmart they were dying I bought them and saved there lifes they were in real small pots. They had no tags. Anyone know what they are ?
Thanks Greg

Fresno, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks allot Im always leary of ordering plants online His company looked trust worthy. Yesterday I ordered some things from Annies I was impressed. I really like my things I received from them. Hopefully I find out what kind of bananas these are. They made me love the bananas. Im really into the cannas too now.
