What's this Blue Heron doing?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

This heron hangs out at the pond near our house most evenings. Last night, he was hanging out as usual, doing a little preening, a little hunting. Then he went into this pose. Held it for about 3 or 4 minutes. Drying his wings? Catching the breeze? Stretching?

Anyone know?

Thanks!
Deb

My guess is he's trying to tune in his favorite program.......neat pic, but I really don't know what he is doing.

Deb;,,

They do that to kill off parasites and mites using the ultra violet rays from the sun..

Nice picture...

Can't see them taking much interest in the crud that's on satellite TV ;-)

Maybe he was trying to pick up "The Life of Birds", Resin :)

"The Life of Fish", maybe, but I don't think that's been made yet ;-)

Thanks, Dave & Resin. What a clever bird! :)

I always thought it was to regulate their temperature. I see it more often when the temps. are real high.

Could be, yes

Ah - well that makes alot of sense, too. Perhaps it's both. The purpose might be to cool off, but the light may also discourage parasites.??
Hmmm.
