Y with 3 branches!

(Zone 6a)

I was really excited when I saw this, one of my brugs I grew from seed last year has recently made a Y. However the Y has 3 branches, so does that mean it's a triple? Please tell me if I'm misinformed but I seem to remember hearing that. I bought the seed from Gordo last year on the DG Marketplace, but got my seedlings mixed up but I'm pretty sure this one is Rubirosa x Peanut.

Heres a pic so you can see the 3 branches with the bud in the middle.

I may be wrong, but all I've come across is seedlings that had 3 cotyledons produce 3-branched "Y"s. Chrissy might know. She had a bunch of seedlings with 3 or 4 cotyledons. She also had one that had 5 cotyledons.

Here was a triple Y ...yes it had three ... but I don't think it means three skirts just perhaps lots of flowers ...at just over a year old in very high temps last summer.

It was also a tri cot seedling. Make any difference? ...I don't know but I am watching several multi cots.
When I know ...I will post the results. ^_^

(Zone 6a)

Thanks Bettydee and Chrissy! I don't remember it being a tri cot because I would have freaked with excitement like I did when I saw the triple Y. But there is lots of buds on it so that is definitely a plus!

Chrissy, Are all the Y's on your brug triple or was it just the first one?

This was my second seedling to flower ...
I am waiting on crosses of my own yet to flower ...these are some the multi cots as little ones ...one is a 5cot ...I have two 4cots and numerous 3cots ...hopefully they will bloom this year, actually it's a bit of a worry as this seems to be unusual and since they are finding three headed fish in QLD it may be something in the water!
this was my no 1 seedling ...just a plain old 2 cot but I am truly loving the tendrils ...you just wait and watch your babies open, it's like Christmas!

no1 seedling (Winter shot this morning) ...frost melting ...full sun.
I am growing it tough ...it was white in 42C last summer so I am a bit shocked to see yellow this morning.

I hope you have the same pleasure as I did when my double/triple (there are three skirts) bloomed, it was also in extreme heat so I am waiting to see how it does in Spring.
good luck and happy brugs.

Forgot to say ...Brenda Delphe made the crosses that are blooming now for me ...I wanted long tendrils and perfume to start and that is what I am getting ...
Many thanks to her (I miss her site and her stuff).

Chrissy, I love those long, long tendrils and such a wonderful yellow color - one of my favorite Brug colors!!! Are both photos of the same Brug cross?

Ludgers Windsong x New Orlean's Lady ...it's very strange bettydee I was expecting lots of whites after reading about pink and orange = white, but so far all yellows with the exception of one pink. I also have read that the mother needs to be a double to get a double and this seed had a single orange mother with a double pollinater, so it's been lots of happy surprises for me. This one is Ludger's Windsong x Mountain Magic

Biggest surprise is these Winter blooms ...OC here last night heavy frost ...I put the seedlings where the sun does not shine on them until the frost melts.

Thumbnail by

This was the pink single last heatwave ...hopefully spring will bring more colour but I quite like the almost ashes of roses colour.

chrissy, I'm so happy for you. You are going to have such a great looking Brug garden next spring and great parents for your next crosses.

Chesapeake Beach, MD

I have a Painted Lady x Adeline hybrid that just made a 3 way Y also (seeds from Brenda Delph planted Fall 2008) but she is only about 10 inches tall and growing rapidly after being kept in a 12 oz. styrafoam coffee cup.

I hope to get a double or triple out of mine too but who knows. The wait is what makes it so exciting when they finally bloom.

(Zone 6a)

Wow Chrissy, that pink Brug is amazing, I love the "ashes of roses colour"! And the yellow one too, those tendrils!!! Thanks for your pic's and experiences, I appreciate it!
I started 2 crosses last summer, Perfect Harmony x Peanut and Rubirosa x Peanut. Any ideas what those crosses might produce? I only have 4 seedlings(2 of each) since we have a small city lot and not much room inside to keep them over winter. Hopefully I'll get some surprises like yours though! Right now I have 2 Brugs that have bloomed, a pale lemony suaveolens and a pale peachy variegated NOID....so I'm really hoping for a pink a double/triple or an orange. I realize they'll probably just be white but hopefully they'll have some nice tendrils or ruffles. BTW, how do you survive 42C? Is it a dry 42 or humid? Here(in a good summer, this summer has been cold!) we often get 35 and humid and it's awful enough.

Brseaton, Do you have a photo of your brug? I love seeing pics! I kept my seedlings in square 6" pots all winter and by spring they looked pathetic. It really is amazing how they bolt once they're potted up.

(Zone 6a)

Heres a pic of my suaveolens, I started her in February of last year. She has a lovely heady scent!

and here's the variegated NOID, a very shy bloomer sold as Datura suaveolens which is incorrect but it was end of season andI know that manager at the garden centre where I got her last year so she was only 1.80$!

this pic was taken the 3rd day the bloom was open

SW Gardner,

I am ashamed to say I do not own a camera or a cell phone - I am a technology dummy.

After seeing all of the lovely pictures of brugs, I have been thinking about getting a digital camera (but not a cell phone).

Nothing has bloomed for me this year but my Rubirosa x Mt. Treasure, Phanomenal, Dbl. Dark Rosetta x Berkonigin, Pink Perfection and Pink Perfection x Dbl. Peach have all Y'd.

Everything was delayed this year because of the weeks of rain we had.

I feel your excitment!
You should get pink with lovely tendrils from your RxP ...any shades of pink ...the other could be a white through to apricot with any shade in between.
Both will carry nice genes if you want to try crossing them for seeds ...I would purchase a good aurea yellow to cross with the chief cross. Try crossing colours to colours so the first one could be crossed with something like Equador Pink ...
My pink was from Butterfly (where you get the ashes of roses hue) to Miss Adeline.
I am a novice so I only speak for what I would do ...just remember most will bloom white or yellow to start and then change depending on the temperatures ...these yellows are blooming in frosty conditions. Brugs are not happy in high heat so give them shelter from the afternoon sun if you can. The bigger the pot the bigger the plant. They will probably bloom in Autumn (Fall).
My very best wishes for beautiful blooms.
chrissy

(Zone 6a)

brseaton, I don't have a cell phone either so your not the only one :) I do love my camera though and it helps you get through the winter staring at pictures of your garden from the previous summer, so you can see what worked and what didn't. Anyways, the crosses your growing sound lovely and I'm sure they're beautiful!

Chrissy, Thanks for the suggestions, you've given me a good mental image of what I might get since this is my first time growing out a cross. And now I have to look up 'Butterfly' because I love that hue!
So if the RxP blooms say in mid-september when it's starting to get cooler here it might not be the same colour it would show when blooming next summer? Thanks again for your input, and I enjoy seeing pics of your seedlings.

Steven

yes that is right here is an example for you ...
this is the same bloom ...as the one below

and in perfect spring weather

So this is why you must wait a few flowerings before you really know the plant ...from what I have observed the flowers just mostly colour according to temps and nutrition, I think it makes them even more interesting to watch the seasonal colour parade as they each have different outfits according to the weather ...so to speak. Here in Australia anyway.

Wow, thanks again! I was amazed by the one that started light apricot and ended up turning orange! I Love the orange ones! Are these all ones you've grown from seed? So, far I've only bought one and grew the rest but I would like to get a few named cultivars for next year :)

Solingen, Germany(Zone 7a)

I remember that I discovered, elsewhere within this forum, a picture of a branch of 'Mobisu' (this is a B.sang. x [B.arbo.'Engelsgloeckchen' x B.sang.] which split into 3 new branches. For my part I do not assume a relationship between the number of cotyledons and multiple branching. And, having crossed 'Mobisu' with a specimen of B.sang. x [(B.vulc. x B.sang.)'roter Vulkan'] I received exclusively seedlings with 2 cot.s and the strongest sibling has just formed its flowering region with three branches and a small bud in the center.

I just retrieved the message:

haweha ...I hope yours is a beautiful plant for you ...good luck with it!

(Zone 6a)

haweha, thank-you for your comments! I'm going to check out the thread you posted and I do hope you'll post a picture of your cross when it blooms! I look forward to seeing it :)

Now, the first brug I posted, the one with 3 branches, I did a bud count on it today and so far it has (apprx)12 buds! It just keeps branching and making buds! Is this considered a good first bloom for a seedling?

Thanks,
Steven

(Zone 6a)

Well, here is the first bloom to start opening on the original brug I posted at the start of this thread. I know for sure its a double and it's opening now as I type this but it's rain out!!! So I haven't gotten a pic. But here she is from earlier this afternoon. I've never seen one with a bulge like this before....is it fairly common?
