Can anyone ID this vine?

VERY tropical growing...in fact...growing wild. Anyone have a clue?

It appears that you have a Medinilla - a tempermental plant, to say the least. Mine is just sending out buds.

Edited to say: mine isn't a vine - it's a shrub.

Yes, the flower head looks similar, except the venation isn't that of a Melastome (Medinilla)...

The leaves don't quite look like mine, either, but with 150 varieties of this plant, I was taking a guess.

The stems don't look Medinilla either. My Medinilla is easy to grow, with big fleshy stems. Not thin woody looking ones. But as said there are many species.

I hope she posts it on the ID forum and lets us know what it is.

Hi Carol, do you know where the plant is located in Hilo? The place where I saw a plant is in a private garden, and I'm not sure if the folks would like it if I took a sample from their plant.

The photo does not show the flowers very clearly. They look like tiny little stars that are white inside.

I'm still having trouble placing it in a Family.

When trained into a bush it is very striking and beautiful!

Interesting, Dave. I will find out from the friend who found it....growing in a vacant lot!!!!

Okay, I am going out on a limb here. This has been nagging me since I first saw this photo, but I initially discounted the possibility because, well, you ARE in HAWAII after all, but....

I think your plant may be a crape myrtle. Its probably the #1 most common flowering plant around here behind azaleas and camillias. But it may not be all that common in Hawaii.

The leaf arrangement is dead on and the flowers are very crape myrtle...it comes in many many shades of red, pink, purple and white.

It may not have occurred to you because its really common elsewhere, but I think that is what it is

Definitely not a Lagerstroemia.
