wanted texas native trees and shrubs

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

like another anacusa, that purple flowered desert willow or red buckeye, pink mexican buckeye. bear grass or other grasses and anything else you think i might need.

really don't want plants until fall.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi,

I have Desert Willow seedlings (both purple and lavender). They are from seeds that I wintersowed this past winter. Let me know if you're interested.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

yeah i am. tell me how big they get? how do they grow...single or multi trunked? are they bad to break in strong winds? when do they bloom? will they grow in clay soil if you know? are they an acid loving plant? and that's only if you know. otherwise i'll look them up. thanks for the offer and which do you like best? barb

Tyler, TX(Zone 8b)

Barb,

These seedlings are my first DW, so I'm new to them also. I Googled them when I got the seeds... from what I read they're pretty hardy, and single trunked and only get about 25' tall.... I didn't see anything pertaining to acid loving, but from experience most evergreen plants like/tolerate acidic soil so I guess they'd be okay with it too.

I've seen pictures of pink and purple, I usually lean more toward purples but both are really pretty so that's a matter of personal preference. The blooms are trumpet-shaped and attract hummingbirds (an added bonus!).

I sent you a Dmail with a link to the site I found the most informative.....

Just give me a hollar if you'd like some.
Chell

thanks chell.

anyone else have native trees/shrubs?

Belton, TX

I have quite a few...eve's necklace, scarlet buckeye (small this year due to drought), persimmon, Texas or Mexican buckeye, carolina buckthorn (native?, but hardy)...seeds for the natives will probably be ready for harvest in late August or September...it is too early now. Why don't you pm me?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi, marie & mama!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Great something else that will not grow inside of an oven!!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hardiness Zones: 4-8

Barb might be able to push that one.

They are a Texas native, I guess just not the parts of Texas that get as hot as here - lol . . . .

Belton, TX

Thank you, local. Scarlet buckeye is a Texas native and we get 100+ sustained annually...it does fine at the edge of watering. Deer leave it alone. It is not really a tree, but a large shrub (10 to 12') tall at maturity. The blossoms are one of the first things to bloom in the spring...usually February here...spectacular blossoms!...then follow the leaves until June when the plant sheds all leaves...the seed pods are large, 2" or better. Scarlet buckeye is very different from Texas buckeye...and I think the names are confused very often. The one you are calling Texas buckeye (pink blooming) is also called Mexican Buckeye because it is actually a native of Mexico...most of the nurseries call it Tex/Mex to resolve any dispute. It is a beautiful plant worth a custody fight!

Carolina buckthorn (I do have a seedling marked for that!) has no thorns...it is a bee and butterfly tree/ornamental shrub...can be invasive, but I have never had that problem at all. Minute white blooms with wonderful scent...bee love it.

No seedlings of scarlet buckeye...I harvest the seeds. I do have other seedlings including redbud and native persimmon. I usually pot them up in the fall to overwinter. I do have seeds of most of the species in my yard and only some of the seedlings...do you have a Sally Wasowski for reference? I can't imagine talking texas natives without 'Native Texas Plants!'...and I email with her now and then if you need deeper research...she's the best!

No peacock glads here...we are mid-way between Waco and Austin at Lake Belton. If you find Temple Lake Park or Morgan's Point on the map, that's us...about 15 minutes west of I-35 from Belton or Temple.

Did I get all the questions?...hope this helps.

Belton, TX

Oh, Mama...you are up near Rockwall...it's quite a trip but you are certainly welcome in Belton. I have cousins moving from Garland to Rockwall this weekend...know the area well and love it up there! I am pretty sure all of the trees I mentioned would work well for you in that area...

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well you're not that ut horticultural girl are you? i just thought we'd talked before and am now trying to jog my memory. maybe it was only someone with a similar name though. and i make things up. lol.

ok i know of the red texas buckeye. and i know of one called mexican buckeye that i thought had pink blooms. the tx. one is single trunked, right? the mexican is multi trunked. so is the scarlet buckeye the same as the red tx. buckeye? also there is a large tree....well it had a pretty thick trunk at the tx. rose emporium of the red tx. buckeye. it is traffic stopping. like red wisteria. these are the slowest growing trees known to man aren't they? lol. i have one that hasn't grown an inch since the first year i don't think. i understand they have to make a long taproot. oh well tick tock.

so do you have the red buckeye? i think you said you had only seeds. do you have the pink buckeye? and you do have a buckthorn? i need to look that up. i am thinking i want these things but not till fall.

what can i get for you? i have named iris i can send now . also many other plants but not till fall.

marie..you make me laugh at the "oven" comment. you are a clever girl.

locakelly......is it an oven where you are too? we got rain and hail last night. rain today. life is good in fate texas today.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Excessive heat warnings.
No rain and 114 F today and tomorrow - it is truly an oven.
Marie was not making that up - lol.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Do not forget to throw in the steam that is rising up out of the oven due to something called humidity!!
