I was going to buy a Blus Satin rose of sharon and try to make it into a tree not a bush form. How would I go about doing that??
How can you make a rose of sharon into a tree?
I've never attempted that on any of mine. I have heard people mention it before. I think they were saying you have to shape it by continuing to clip off the lower undesired growth. I hope I'm giving you the correct information.

Jess, a friend of mine is making progress in developing a rose of sharon standard, but it appears to be a slow process. She staked the central stem, removed all of the low branches, and trims the remaining stems. Lots of work. I have too much work to do in the garden with my limited time to keep up with such a project, so I paid for mine. But, they give a very long period of bloom, so they are well worth the effort. Good luck!
ROS standards late in the day as the flowers have closed somewhat and I see I've got the food buffet ready for the evening's many critter friends.

omg, I kept looking in the pic for the small ros standards & didn't realize it was the two very large trees you were speaking of! that is unbelievably beautiful! thanks
Thank you, davis. I'm glad you like them. I have a path that needed a plant with height, but only a small area had 3 or 4 hours of daily sun with the balance being open shade. Determined to give it a try, two years ago I planted a lavender ROS in the sunny spot and so far it is doing its best to grow and flower. It will never be as full as the white trees growing in full sun; but all things considered, not bad for two years.

I'd say it's doing excellent for 2 yrs growth! Gee what type of soil must you have, miracle grow? lol I don't have anything with close to that type of growth in just 2 years, stunning!
davis, as one gardener here on Dave's put it, "a lot of blood, sweat, and tears" went into building my garden. It took me 11 years to complete my one acre garden as I removed two feet of hard clay and a bizillion rocks from all beds and back filled with amended topsoil. Thought the process would never end but it did and now I can grow nice plants or they do not like my climate and die their first year. Lol. I also help my plants with a layer of composted manure each spring.

wow, you went down 2ft & removed that much clay? How (pls tell me not by hand)? I face the same issues living on a clay hill & I can't fathom doing the entire yard. If you have pictures of your work, I'd love to see some of your progress or even before & after shots.
btw, when you started your project you were in your early 20's right?
davis you can see much of my garden by clicking on the following link. Once you are there, scroll down to signing in as a guest, then go to "Our Gardens", then scroll some more to "Tussee's Garden".
