Bud Drop

Doniphan, MO

I sprayed this plant with the water hose and it started looking alot better. I thought the bud's were going to make it this time, but they are just staying on the plant longer. Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

The bud looks healthy to me. The cause is some kind of stress on the plant. It can be from excessive wind, being too hot. It can also just be a genetic characteristic of that specific variety. Some are much more prone to bud dropping compared to others.

I'm having some bud drop also. I've sprayed em with Bayer 3 in 1 so I don't think it is thrips. I figure it's either the wind cause we often get some really great bursts of wind or else the extreme heat were having without any rain.

It's pretty common this time of year Patty. I have some bud drop also even though I've sprayed. Its probably wind and heat and dryness. I just pick up all of the buds on the ground in case its still an insect doing it.

I've been trying to pick them up also and I've been pulling the yellow leaves off just like you said you do. Looks better.

The hibbies at church are really looking stressed. I think one or more may need to be repotted, but they are all in these really large, very heavy pots. Kinda hard to do it myself. I need to take a picture of one of the ones I'm talking about and see what you think. I don't think the soil is holding in any moisture and the plant is just burning up. There's no way I can go and water daily. I'm trying for twice a week sometimes three times, but even that is really not enough with the heat, wind and drought conditions.

Could be they're not getting enough water and the pots are heavy and thick and really retain a lot of heat during the day. I'm not sure why you would want to repot them now if they looked stressed. I would assume they are not too big for their pots already. You may want to try putting some mulch inside the pots on the top of the soil to see if that helps then retain some moisture a little longer. I even put a layer of mulch in my potted hibiscus to help them from drying out real fast in the summer. It also actually makes them look nice that way.

I feel your frustraion... Bud drop has been driving me crazy due to the hot a dry weather the last couple weeks. Some cvs are better than others. Here is a pick of " Think Pink that dropped and luckily opened for me after.

Finally got a bloom out of this plant. It doesn't look too good though. Does anybody know what it is.? Doesn't it look a little ragged?

Not sure which variety it is. I like it. It's a "double" bloom and they can vary quite a bit from bloom to bloom. Hang in there and you will get some upcoming blooms you really like. Unfortunately not all blooms on any kind of flowering plant are perfect.

Was this something that you found somewhere like Lowes/Home Depot? I wonder if it might be 'Kona', it's an old double flowered pink one. I'm sure there are other possibilities too, pink is a pretty common color. And I agree about hanging in there on the flowers--I've noticed when I have buds that sat there forever before they opened, a lot of times the bloom won't look quite as nice as ones that open faster.
