how to get to bloom?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i have had these plumies from seed they are over 5 years old. get bloom boost and stuff but have never bloomed. they are just about root bound in their pots. i have to keep in greenhouse during winter. why arent they blooming??

Sometimes it just takes plumerias grown from seed several years to bloom. Five years is not unusual.

However, the fact that your plants are root bound may slow their blooming. I would increase the size of your pots and give the roots room to grow. How tall are your plants and how big are your pots? Are the roots coming out of the drainage wholes? Have the plants branched? It would help if you could post a picture.

one has branched out. the pots are about 3 to four gallons they arent very tall yet. biggest one is like 4 feet. still small enough for me to carry. will try transplanting them. no roots out bottom of holes. not that root bound.

I have five- and six-year-old seedlings that have not bloomed yet either, but it sounds like yours are potted in small containers. Most of mine are rootbound in 15-gallon containers. I would definitely pot them up to larger containers (at least five-gallons) or put them in the ground for the summer until your first frost date.

Forget the bloombooster fertilizer. It is now understood that a high phosphorus number is actually bad for plants. Try a balance fertilizer like 10-10-10. It's the last number, potassium, that helps with blooms.

Make sure that they are getting full sun (at least six hours of continuous sun) and plenty of water with good drainage.

My Plumeria Rubra has its first bloom stalk on it, although from what I've heard is that the first time anyone gets inflo started it doesn't mean that you should get too excited about it blooming the next spring. So I'm just a little upset, unless I'm totally mistaken?

I am new to plumerias, so I have a question about what Barry just said. My plumeria has two of what he said are bloom stalks, buty what is inflo?

inflo = inflorescence = bloom stalk

At least one of your plants looks to be a grafted plant (the one in the back)
If your plants are actively growing as indicated by your statement, you could have blooms soon. Keep an eye out for a bloomstalk, which initially looks like a tiny head of broccoli in the center of the tip.
Not every tip blooms every year so don't be disappointed if you don't get blooms this year. Give them as much warmth and sunshine as you can, fertilize lightly, and the rest is up to Mother Nature.

I wanted to show off my new leaves. I used a 10-10-10 fertilizer today. I also have a 9-59-8 someone recommended should I use that when I see a bloom stalk?

They're looking good. Stay away from the high middle number fertilizers; they are designed for annuals.

Thank you I will. Im moving to 29Palms California in december. How do you think they will do there?

Yuma, AZ

What are the winter lows like? I know that they get enough heat in the summer.

I believe that is Sunset zone 13 http://www.sunset.com/garden/climate-zones/sunset-climate-zone-california-desert-00418000067305/ Aside from the wind, they should do ok there.

Thank you. Will I need to invest in a shade cloth? To shade about 25% of the direct sunlight come summer in 29palms?

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm no expert, but I would think they will adapt to the sun. The winds in that area are another matter. Try to find a spot where they are sheltered form the wind.

In pots you may need to supplement with shade, but in the ground they should adapt to the sun and heat.

They are all in pots our winter is to harsh for them. I keep them in a heated greenhouse during winter.

I meant when you move...

I noticed yesterday my 7 month old puppy had chewed the tips of my Diamond Locket. What should I do about the damage done to tips? I had one break in half once and I just stuck the broken half into the pot and to my surprise l had leaves sprout on both pieces. But it was a clean break.
