Hibiscus "White Magic" In Front Of A Long Container Of Gerbera Daisies.
Hibiscus Blooms From Today (July 22) In Ft Lauderdale
Wow, did you get a new camera or is this monitor of mine so much more vivid than my laptop's? The colors just POP! Berried Treasure is on my wish list, looks like I have to add Neon Nova and Lemon Express too. I have the others but of course, they are too small to see blooms just yet. I can hardly wait! Thanks for whetting my appetite Jon!
Very nice blooms Jon, I bet you can see Neon Nova from a quarter mile away.
I also like Pocahontas and its different colors (7?). I usually have trouble with White Magic blooms, they hardly ever look that nice for me.
Dave
I noticed that also Dee about the vivid colors. Perhaps it's just because there is a very wide range of colors in the six pictures. Anticipation of seeing first blooms is a very very good thing Dee. You always have to have some that are still a mystery and something to look forward to.
White Magic blooms have been getting better with time here Dave. I can relate to your experiences with that variety. The initial ones were very small, but they are getting better recently.
Neon Nova is such a "ham". It always wants to be the center of attention.
Great to have multiple blooms of her too! She deserves all the attention she can get. How old is she and how big of a pot is she in?
Hi Dee
She's was adopted about 15 months ago, is potty trained and it currently in a 10 incher. I just hope she doesn't go into the "terrible two's" next year. She's been very well behaved so far, and doesn't even mind sitting right next to hibiscus "Misbehavin". Hehe
Jon
Wow those are pretty and I know you won't be surprised when I say my favorite is Berried Treasures. Your pictures really do showcase the colors of these hibbies well. What time of day were you taking your pictures?
Hey Jon--what type of mats (?) do you have under your pots? Is this for drainage?
Patty
I take most of the photos in the mid to late morning when the bloom colors are most vibrant. The sun is still at an angle then. Photos in the afternoon usually pick up too much of a glare from the sun.
Most of mine by the pool sit on top of upside down long rectangular plastic containers with the bottom holes punched out. That way I'm sure all the excess water will completely drain out of the pots and they won't reabsorb any standing water that collects on the tiles when it rains heavily. This also keeps the plants/pots a bit cooler since they are elevated and not baking on the hot tiles. Using this method I only have to water them every 3 days, even during the hot summer.
Jon
Great Jon... I really like " Lemon Empress"
Thanks Jon. I'm liking Lemon Empress also. I've only had it nine days now. Some of the blooms have been singles and some of them have been semi doubles. Just wondering if I'll eventually see full doubles also on this plant. That would be interesting.
Hi Jon,
Once again your hibs look spectacular, we have pocahontas also but yours looks like it might be larger, do you get a large bloom out of it or is it on the small size. Ours is aroung 4.5 to 5"
Patrick
Thanks Patrick. My Pocahontas blooms have been smaller (3-5") and lighter in color this summer. From autumn through late spring they were more vivid, probably 5-7" and sometimes stayed open for 3 days. The one good trait that has been happening year round is the upright habit of the blooms. They always face slightly upward which is ideal for viewing.
Jon
thanks for all the razzle dazzle jon, gosh I love these plants. Thanks to you, theres more on my want list today!
LOL Debbie. I love being an enabler. The main thing I'm uncomfortable doing is when someone asks you about a certain variety that hasn't performed all that well for you personally. It's easier just to say the variety is great. It takes a little more guts to be honest with your opinion and maybe help someone pick another variety that they may be much happier with. Have any of you guys/gals ever felt this way?
I'd rather you tell me flat out if a cv didn't perform well jon. No reason to make it sound like it does if it don't. For instance, which of the above would you steer a beginner like me away from?
I'm still unsure about White Magic. It's been growing a bit on the slow side and wants to grow more upward . The blooms at first were very small. The last few blooms have been an improvement, but still smaller than I expected. The other ones I'm happy with.
I just love White Magic. If you ever decide the blossums are too small for you, I'd be very glad to give her a home. Dottik
Love the colors of the newer hibiscus.
Yep. As the numbers of hybrids increase each year, so do the possibilities. There's a bigger "playing field" to cross pollinate with.
Do these Hibs. have seeds ever?
That 1st one is beautiful.
Lavina
Some of them will set seed, but I think that's in the minority. The pods will fall off before they mature. I don't believe any of the hybrids will come true to seed also. The way to replicate them is generally through grafting or growing from a cutting.
They are beautiful. I'm still drooling over all of them.
Jon like always, your blooms are to much to handle, just gorgeous, really gorgeous. love when you post them for us to see, thanks.
Wilfred
