my straight eight cukes not producing

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

I have grown straight eight cucumbers for several years- my crop this year has not set the first one- all kinds of male blossoms, but nada! I have 2 other varieties, Eureka, and Early Spring hyb, both are making babies. Any ideas? The soil is the same in all of them- I am stumped.

My Straight Eights didn't do ANYTHING at all this year. My husband declared them "retarded" and yanked them out. LOL

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Nada from Straight 8 in my yard either.

Sounds like a cuke conspiracy to me!

My straight eights have done well this year. I also planted one called Poinsett and it did pretty well.

I just pulled up all the vines- there was not one cuke anywhere- I will not grow them again-

I planted Poinsett last year because it was supposed to be disease resistant, and the vines all succumbed to wilt.

I sowed cucumber seed three years ago and have had volunteers produce more cucumbers than I can use ever since! They look different every year, but taste great.

Ditto on the Straight Eights. Beautiful vines, masses of blooms, no cucumbers. Other types planted are doing pretty good. My grandson, Evan will be three in October, is sooo excited because NaNa has pickles growing in the garden. This is our first year to grow the "Pickle Bush" variety and it is really living up to its name. He likes cucumbers but these are special, these are "pickles" on the vine. Canning will be a new experience for him this year.

My straight eights have not produced anything including blooms and the leaves are drying up and the whole vine is scratchy scraggly....but my Boston Picklings are going great guns....I've been canning pickles and looks like it will only get better with the Bostons, Thank Heaven...I bought both the seed from the same place where I get my organic seed...Deb

Straight Eights have been a Southern garden staple for many years. Don't get it though. I had problems with Straight Eight over twenty years ago and gave up trying to grow it. If you research the variety, it is not reliable at all. I'd prefer recommends on heirloom, but grow Burpee burpless and Mayo picklers. Never a problem.
