Need a volunteer

Norman, OK

I have this cute little cowboy boot birdhouse out by the patio and I'm pretty sure something is nesting in it. Not Chickadees. Not Wrens, nor Housefinches. I'm getting too old to climb up on ladders. Need a volunteer to climb up there and tell me what is nesting in this house. :)

Me too! That is a scary sight.

Get some wasp killer spray and nail 'em - one day they may turn on you.

I'd leave them be - they do a lot of useful work removing insect pests from the garden

Difficult to determine in the pic, but these are Western Yellowjackets, Vespula pensylvanica. They are scavengers as much as hunters and are attracted to food on the patio, garbage and especially the jelly in my Oriole feeders as well as the HB feeders. They are aggressive stingers and most folks see little benefit to having this species as a close neighbor.

Unless I get a volunteer, these are safe. At least all except the queen which will remain in the nest when cold weather comes. I'm not getting any closer until then.

I wouldn't want to spray wasp/hornet spray inside. That stuff is nasty and it's residue might harm future birds nesting there.

Well it's got wings, it qualifies for the bird house. :)) I'd wait till fall to rid the queen.
My sister got this, in her backyard, the Bald-faced Hornet, she wants to save the nest after the cold sets in.

Being allergic to bee stings, I'd still take them out.
