I am growing potatoes in about 15-18" of LOOSE straw, but now I have potato bugs!! What's the best thing to use to get rid of them??? A friend's grandfather said he put salt on them while in the larva stage, and they do seem to hate that. Does anyone else have any other ideas?? Other than the bugs, my potatoes are doing great! :)
Thanks!
Glenda
Growing potatoes in straw, but still have potato bugs! Help!
Thanks for the links....they told me what I'm up against. It's not encouraging. :(
Man, I remember picking potato bugs off the plants every year when I was a kid. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the chickens to eat them, either.
The kerosene trick does work - mostly. We used to pick the bugs off the taters, and would drop an entire leaf if it had eggs on the underside. Our infestations were vaguely controllable that way.
I read this on site about lasagna gardening
Be on the watch for potato bugs. Try to catch them when they are small. Sweep across the foliage with a broom. They will fall into the mulch and, when small, not be able to find their way back up to the leaves.
