Everfloris/ Space Babies- are they worth it?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

So, I'm about to purchase my first AV's! And I was browsing through a bunch of sites and came across the variety called Everfloris or Space Babies. Apparently the seeds were aboard a shuttle for 6 years and they flower continuously!

I'd really love to have flowering AV's all year round.

Do they REALLY flower all year? They're far more expensive than other varieties! However, if they produce more flowers and are always in bloom, that would be worthwhile!

Here are some links- http://www.selectivegardener.com/Catalog.php?category=5 and http://www.bluebirdgreenhouse.com/html/space01.htm

Thank you!

Hi Ellen;
Yes they are really worth the time. Once they get established , they are really beautiful. I just gave a neighbor 1 i started from a leaf & it is blooming beautifully now.i did not keep it as they do get big & i do't have the room.they sure are pretty.

Thanks Miss Bonnie. It is also something that I wondered about too. I have a leaf from the RR, so now I know what to look forward to.

Thank you! I appreciate the response.

How long do you think it would take these http://www.selectivegardener.com/Catalog.php?category=18 to get big?

Do they work for hanging baskets?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Personally, I would never try and make a hanging basket from an african violet.

They get no bigger than a large standard violet.

I have grown some of them and thought they were beautiful. As far as cost goes, I didn't realize that they were more expensive than other violets. I have paid more than 10.00 for a leaf of an african violet I really wanted.

Am going to your site and see what they are charging.................maybe they are almost fully grown when they ship??

***yikes, they are expensive for a little plug. Maybe you can find some of them on other sites for less..........

OMG- Look at these prices- 29.95 for one plant and 15.95 for a plug! http://www.buyafricanviolets.com/everfloris.php And they have no feedback on the garden watchdog!

Going to keep searching!

I LOVE the idea of having continuous blooms!

i don't think i would put one of these in a hanging basket, there are trailing african violets that you can do that with, really quite a few, anywayI am sure someone should have these plants & could give you a leaf, they are fast growers,

Bluebird Greenhouse sells a couple of the EverFloris AV's: http://www.bluebirdgreenhouse.com/html/space01.htm

I've purchased plants from them in the past and they were decent size and very healthy. They ship in 4" pots but it has been a few years since I've ordered from them so I can't say how large the plants would be nowadays. There should be a phone number to call and ask.

I forgot ... here's the link for BB in the Garden Watchdog: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/2824/

I have always had good luck with Bluebird...........they ship them in too large of a pot, but I just repot them down a size and use my own mix........but they have always been healthy plants..........

I just got home from Lowe's, had to pick up orchid bark. They had four or five of the EverFloris AV's but no prices and I couldn't find someone to get a price! Wish I'd have thought to take one to the register with me to have them scan it but I'm old and sometimes a bit scatterbrained, especially this week with a lot of family stuff going on. So, check your local Lowe's! Maybe they aren't real expensive ... they were really good sized plants!

Well , let's just say that I had to go to Lowes and just had to go by the garden dept. Yep, they had them. I just had to bring home two of these beauties. I got EverSpecial and EverBeautiful. Huge plants. Not to bad a price either, $7.99.
They were sooo over watered. Right now they are sitting on paper towels. I will just see how they do.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

I think that I'm in trouble. EverSpecial is really wilted this morning. I have taken it out of the pot and set it on several layers of paper towels. Is this the right thing to do?

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

I don't know about what you should do because I am such a Newbie but I got mine at Lowes also. Once it started blooming it is amazing! It is the most floriferous plant I have. It is almost like the blooms explode once they start. Good luck with yours:)

wow...thanks for posting this...I never knew about them!

Here is an article that has me wanting the everharmony...badly!...just gorgeous.

You know, if it had these effects on seeds, what did it to to the humans and their reproductive organs???...food for thought!!
