Please identify this bird

We were meeting friends at the Sequoyah Bay State Park and we sat like 12 inches from the nest of these birds. There was a mom and dad going ballistic because we were almost on top of their nest. Once we realized what was happening we all got up and moved, which made them much more at ease. But, they did keep watching us. They had four eggs, which were gray with black markings. Awesome bird and we were so sorry that we disturbed its nest.

I wanted to make sure and include a picture of the nest with the beautiful eggs...

I believe that is a Killdeer.

Thank you! I think you are right, however, the descriptions I have read about the eggs do not match what I took a picture of. It does look like the pictures I have seen.

Yep, definitely Killdeer. Four eggs, laid in gravel like that, is right too.

Did they do the "broken wing" routine? That's what they do to try and get you away from their nests. We just love it when one nests in our yard. DH puts a stake up so he mows a wide berth around them. They are so brave, they'll fly almost in his face, even when he's on the riding mower, so we always know when and where a nest is around.

Joan!

They didn't do the "broken wing" dance, but they sure did make alot of noise!! Very beautiful birds.
