Here is H. cv. Ruthie, not happy enough to completely cover one tree all the way to the top (40') and hang down...but now she is growing into her neighbor... This is when we have to get the extension ladder and get as high as we can and cut the vines... Those vines you see hanging down are about 8 feet long!!! This is 3.5 years of growth....
Time to Prune....
Your hoyas look like mine, LOL. Takes a very tall ladder to prune or even take cuttings of some of mine which is why I don;t offer trades a lot, its too hard to get up there to get the ends!
Wow, love those vines. Wish mine could grow like that. Don't want to sound dumb here Carol but what is Mountain Apple?
Dee
ah...Mountain Apple is a fruit...it blooms and fruits right on the trunk of the tree! They look like an apple, and taste much sweeter...not much flavor at all, just sweet with a red skin. Great in salads....
Carol ... those are Happy Hoya's!! Love that plant called Mountain Apple too, pretty color ... I had to go google that one as I'd never heard of it: http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/malay_apple.htm and another one with pretty blooms: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/64699/
Goth: That's amazing that you can grow huge Hoyas in Gainesville, I would have thought they'd freeze in the winter temp's, but maybe you have a greenhouse? It would be great to have them growing up the trees like they do in Hawaii.
A question Carol. Was that plant started off at the base of the tree as a single cutting, or multiple cuttings?
Dominic
yes plantlady I do have a modest greenhouse growing area, about 1750 sq ft and they do grow in trees like in Hawaii
Thanks Gothqueen! It sure makes me wish I had a greenhouse again!
Dom...one small plant, put it in the ground (?) and up it went! 4 years later....
I remember when you first found Ruthie, Carol. We thought you had hit the jackpot of Hoyas! She is a beauty.
Yes...she is. Little did we know, eh Mel!! BTW Ed got his PhD and is going to be here Thursday...before they go off to Australia where Ed will be working with the University on projects. Can you believe it? Hope the blooms hold...maybe he can cross some more!!!! How about H. coronaria with H. affinis????
WOW! Good for Ed. He has it all...looks, personality, and smarts. From a young age, he sure looked like he was destined for great things. I am really happy for him. Does this mean we need to call him Dr. G now? Please give him a nice pat on the back for me. I know you are proud.
Yup...love that boy!!! I really am proud!! Will give him your love.
