Hi,
I got some carrots from a friend today that he grew and I have a question because I am growing some for the first time.
The carrots are very pale, what causes that? I want to get a jump on it for my carrots so they come out nice dark orange.
Thanks,

Susan, if you look at the photos in catalogues you'll see that carrots tend to come in lots of different shades and intensities of colors, so your friend may just have been growing a light-hued variety. What kind were they, do you know?
The orange colour is due to a pigment called beta carotene. You can also get red, purple, yellow, and white carrots! As greenhouse gal says, it's all down to choosing your variety.

really? I am so surprised! I thought it would have been a soil defficiency of some kind. I do nto know what variety they were, but I hope mine are darker.
Thanks,
