Broody Duck Question

(Zone 7b)

I don't know much if anything about ducks being broody and i have a white call who has laid 2 eggs.
I put the 2 under a broody banty hen and crossed my fingers they will hatch.

But yesterday when i moved the pair i noticed i could feel another egg inside her and she went to her nest when i put them in their new pen.
I don't know how many she will lay because she was laying when i got her so i have no idea how many she laid before.

Can anyone tell me about broody ducks are they basically like a broody chicken?
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated

Sounds similar to a hen--except for needing extra moisture:

You will know if the duck lays on the nest. You will be able to tell if she is a broody duck, she will stay on the nest all the time. She will come out from the nest long enough to eat and drink and walk around for a few mins then she will go back to the nest. They will get off of the nest alot at first because it take a month to hatch. At the end she will stay on it and hardly won't get off unless she has too.

My Rouen hen is a broody. When they stay on the nest alot, they inten to lose their feathers on their chest. Not go bald but kind of like their down feathers.Other words it will be smooth their you will be able to tell.

She will also get very protective over the nest. That means she is warning you to stay away for the nest.Just put hay in their with her and the eggs and she will build walls around the nest so the eggs won't roll or go to far.

Harmonyplace, all you can do is try you won't know until you try.I forgot to tell you last night that they won't lay on the nest until they have anywhere from 4 or more eggs in the nest.Until they lay on the nest they roll the eggs often and they keep them wet while they roll them.Don't be nervous try it,i was not nervous when i done it i had to see if i had a broody. What ever you do make sure the nest is not in a flood zone or make sure it's off the ground were water won't get to them.Either way nature will take it course you will lose some either way, with her broody or the incubator.

Oh, that makes me want a call duck. I just don't know if they are allowed in the city limits.

Thank You Rose Girl well i came back from my vacation and she now has 5 eggs and i have no idea how many she will lay.
Should i just leave them and let her sort them out?
Her nest is in the back of a off ground pen and i saw her today take a swim in her little pond container and then go sit on the eggs is this what you mean by her wetting them?

Light For Jesus Calls are very loud when they quack they don't do it all day but when they do it's a ear full LOL
They are very sweet and get attached to people very easily :~)

Harmonyplace, she wets the eggs as she is turning them with her beak.Do what you think is right.Either let her lay on them or you can put them in the incubator.Sounds to me that she is a brood hen. That is their nature to lay on them,it just takes some longer to learn to sit on them.Just keep an eye on her and you will see how often she comes out,now that she is laying.Yes, they are loud and they are people friendly if people take up the time with them.I have a total of 13 or 14 Mallards and when i stand still in the pen they come up and peck my boots.

Theres 6 eggs now {:~)

Cool.....how often does she lay an egg.I guess every duck is different. The Mallards only lay so many per year.I'm not sure about the others.

OH!!!!! I just checked and now she has "7" and she has been laying every day so far.

I wonder how many she is going to lay and i'm sssssooooooo excited

If you could see me, you would be shocked. Looks like some one hit me in the jaw. I had a abscessed tooth pulled. I told the dentist if she founded any oil or gold in that hole that she was digging in my mouth it was all mine and I was not sharing. LOL
