I mentioned in today's journal that I would have to tell you my centipede story - actually I was informed that what I thought were centipedes were actually millipedes.
So here is the story:
When we built our house, due to a rash of recent neighborhood burglaries/vandalisms, we had a security system installed. It's one of those punch button doo dads. If you open the wrong door before you punch the right button, a siren blasts or if somebody walks in the house after we have left, a siren blasts. The system is also connected with a fire detector. Well Monday night dh and I went to bed. I had just fallen asleep when the siren starts blaring. Dh grabs the handgun out of the night stand, pulls on his pants and starts running through the house. He disengages the siren and slowly makes his way checking all the doors. All the doors were still deadbolted. And then I freaked out that somebody was in the house before we locked everything up so he starts checking all the nooks and crannies, etc. etc. We finally figured than an intruder wouldn't have locked the door behind him. (duh!) We then noticed a little red blinking light on the fire detector so we thought it was shorting out. On Tuesday a.m., I called the company that installed the system and they indicated that since the alarm is 5 years old, that indeed it might be time to replace it, etc. The alarm technicians came out and pulled down the alarm system. The guy looks in the box and hollars whoa and drops the box. I look inside it and there is a millipede. Can you believe it? Our ceilings are 9 foot high. I called the entomologist at the Extension Office today for suggestions. She admitted this was a first. Still not sure what to do - she said that the exterminators are pretty much a waste of money. The millipedes will disappear with a frost.
