Anyone Grow Potatoes in Fall?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

According to my fall planting guide, we can grow potatoes starting later this month. When I called a local garden center to see if they had any seed potatoes, I was told I couldn't grow them in the fall because they wouldn't have enough time to mature before frost. (Well, that was after I told her "NO, not sweet potatoes." and "No, not sweet potato vine!." Now, I'm a bit confused. Can I successfully grow potatoes in the fall here??

Hey stephanietx;

Don't see why not. I've planted several kinds of potatoes here.
Shepherd Tx area zone 8 60 odd miles north of Houston.
Finding seed this time of year can be hard though.

I garden 'bout 31/2 acres: http://www.flickr.com/photos/heycharlie/sets/656614/

In the fall or this time of year I have bought various taters from the grocery store to plant.
Gold or unusual hard to find varieties.
Set them in a dark or shaded place for a week or so if ya can. Most will eventually sprout.
However, many will grow without ever see a sprout, jus let them set a while first.

Sorry for such a long answer
Good luck

Give it a try, steph! Most potatoes grown for sale in the grocery stores have been treated to delay or prevent sprouting, but most will eventually. I have a few overlooked ones in the crisper of the fridge that have sprouted and I'm going to quarter them, leave a day or two in the open to callous over the cut edges and then plant. A good mulch up and around the foliage should help get them through at least the first frosts. It's worth a try! Then if that works, next spring I can grow a specialty variety and hold a few back for fall planting.

We've finally had some rain just now. Just a shower, really, but it has been so long that I'd forgotten how good it smells. My garden this summer has been zilch - no rain and the heat killed everything. I hope I can get a little production this fall. Yuska
