I never thought it could be done, but I did it!! My 8 corn stalks growing in a HEB produced more corn than I was ever able to produce in my efforts in garden spots. Only 1 ear per stalk, but now I know it can be done.. Ate the first ear raw and it was great!!
I got corn!!
Here's my microwave corn recipe.
Leave the corn in the husks and nuke 'em in your Microwave Oven. One large ear = 3 minutes. One Medium ear = 2.5 minutes. Small ear = 2 minutes. After the oven "dings" let the corn sit it the husk for an additional minute. Get two paper towels. Hold the corn with one towel. It will be very HOT! Use the other paper towel 2 peel back the husks. Sort of wipe the ear in a downward, twisting motion. The steaming seems to make the kernels expand, so the silks are released and should wipe off almost completely.
This corn will have a nutty, roasted flavor. It is so naturally delicious, I don't even reach for salt OR butter anymore! Try it. You'll like it - 'Ah Guarantee' Cher!
You can do more ears in a batch. Just try to keep all the ears a uniform size per batch. I use a loose "guess-timate" on total cook time. Like 6 lg ears @ maybe 16 or 17 minutes. Better 2 go a bit below than 2 overcook. The steaming in the husks will compensate.
ENJOY!
Linda

Thanks Linda, that sounds great. I'll try it when I have more corn. As you can see I already shucked all I got this go round. We were going to save it for a few days but I think not. My wife is already getting on me for not saving her an ear. I did but she has to have something to fuss at me about. Love her!!
congratulations! i'm definitely growing corn next season.
Me too! Soon as I find out when to plant it! Linda

We had our first sweet corn last night..Tried your recipe for in the microwave..We were sceptical..Don't like the taste of micrwave cooked stuff..BUT..Done just rightut Corn taste GRAET..Thank you..Dh said your right it is very hot..LOL
This will also work outside on the BBQ grill.
If you pre-open the husks and remove most of the silk, you can season and butter, then close the husks before placing on the grates.
Soaking the whole un-husked ears first will prevent overecooking and provide some steam to the process.
Good eatin' y'all.
I sooooooooooo love when people try it and like it!
Bubba, let's plant some corn of our own! I'm devoting one EB and maybe two tall 15 gallon planters for corn this season.
Do you really think we can get a crop this year?
I could devote the whole west end of my patch, but that would only allow for a couple rows - 10' long. If I space the hills 1 foot apart it's only 22 hills.
Bubba,
Look at TPlant's corn! He grows 16 stalks PER Earthbox. That's 32 ears of corn in a 14" x 29" or roughly 2.76 square feet space (um, I now keep the EB dimensions in my pocket....).
How big is your back 40?
How much corn can we eat between December and next Spring???!!

You have not seen me at my corn-eatin' best - I can eat 6-8 with a meal - if corn is the meal, start with a dozen.
And that is field corn - 18-22 rows of kernels - sweet corn may have as few as 8-10 rows, so would need more.
If we got 2 ears per stalk and 2 stocks per hill, I think we would be lucky to harvest 60-75 ears - there will be some loss to bugs, birds, and sampling.
Maybe we should plant popcorn.
edit: Would probably work best with a couple of fish per hill - don't need the whole fish - just whats left after fileting.

I can check with my local Fiesta fishmonger for fish guts....
Uh, that's entirely too much corn at one sitting!
And I just read up on growing corn, and they said field corn was for the livestock. So, we have to grow the sweet "people" corn! ^_^
Bubba,
The schedule below says we can plant sweet corn on August 25th! Let's go for it! Where do we get seeds from?

gessieviolet: Yum, pass the butter please, those look great, and huge too.
gymgirl: That does it, I was contemplating planting more corn since my other is done already; and now that you have that microwave recipe here, I know I gotta plant it now just to try it out. LOL
