I am in zone 7B but my White Butterfly Ginger rebounds great. I am going to have to order some others from her in another month or so. Don't think I want to try planting in this heat.
She does have alot to offer in gingers..
Wwll, just what did you get? I have several, myself. They are holding up a lot better than my daylilies are in this heat and drought!
I have a question: Do any of you ginger growers feed them alfalfa pellets?
Nice website and what a source. I love gingers.
During your visit did she share any impute as to what gingers over winter well in Texas.
Did she have a favorite list. I wish we could get her on here and let her do a info article. Would be nice to know now she treats her collection in our winters. The tropicals would have to be green-housed. Our white butterfly is one of those plants just stick it in the ground and enjoy it. Ginger culture and Texas.
How lucky you are to have her near you.
Thanks for sharing
Karen
Noreen will tell you right off whether which gingers will work in your zones. She answered every question we had for her to answer so she was very knowledgable about the gingers. Her plants were very well taken care of and very lush..
We got these:
Costus
TICO SUNRISE
TROPICAIS
Hedys
CINNABAR
DOUBLE EAGLE
GLAUCUM
GOLDEN BUTTERFLY
KAI YANG
LEMON SHERBERT
MOMO HIKARI
SALMON
PINK V
Curcuma
BAND OF GOLD
CORDATA "JEWEL OF THAILAND
FLAVIFLORA "FIREBALL
I have most of all my gingers in the ground..except any zone 10 ginger will be housed in my hothouse during the winter...I have a very large collection of gingers..ask Kenboy...lol..he knows...
You got a nice selection! I have a policy, though. No more greenhouse plants! If it doesn't make it in the ground, it's too bad. I can't haul them anymore. I have some of the ground cover gingers, including the giant one, pinecone, shampoo, dwarf and shell. I just love them all.
I have a couple of different gingers but don't know the varieties, one is varigated. They have never bloomed. They get some sun but mostly dappled sun during the day. I don't know what I am doing wrong. They get plenty of water and the foliage looks healthy, just no blooms. :0(
Bonnie
Hi Bonnie,
That's probably the one that's grown for the foliage. It will probably never bloom.
ALPINIA ZERUMBET VARIEGATED 5' - 6' part sun Called "shell ginger" with leaves that have outstanding variegation. This ginger makes a great container plant. Will take the cold into the 20's before the leaves will freeze. Zone 7

Bonnie, It is propably variegated shell ginger as Annette said. I planted one three years ago and it bloomed for the first time this year. One problem with them is they bloom on second year "wood" so if they get any frost damage they won't bloom. Here is a picture of it starting to bloom back in May

Okay, here's a basic question. I like to EAT ginger, as in gingerroot. Do any or all of these plants qualify for that purpose? Is it only a specific one? I guess I ought to do some research myself, but if anyone knows offhand, I'm interested.
