Help with peas, Please?

Chaska, MN(Zone 4a)

Hi all,
ok I have grown peas for 3 yrs, and I am not an expert, but I have always picked them when the shells are all swollen/and full. This year my shells and nice and swollen and big, and when I open them up, I have tiny little oval peas inside. they are about half the size you would expect. Still edible and sweet, but I was hoping for nice round bigger peas! that fill the pods?
If the size of the pod is not the right indicator for picking, what should I be looking for? Or is this indicative of another kind of problem?

Feeling the pod and doing a sample is about the best way. They vary considerably among cultivars, so you have to figure out whats best for you with specific cultivar. Some have enormous rounded pods, others are tighter and flatter. The big podded ones are more apt to trick you.

It helps to rattle the pods with your fingers. Quickly, back and forth. If you can hear the peas rattle, they are too small. You should not be able to hear them.

Some pods are more translucent, you can look through them and see the peas inside, holding them up for the sun.

Thanks beebonnet- the rattle idea is great. I went out and picked last night, and it really works well! Thanks.
LTilton- I'm sure your idea works as well, unfortunately it has been dark and overcast here for the last 3 days! and VERRY cool. That plus I did not get to go out last night till 8pm after my kiddos were in bed- so I haven't tested yet.
I know I can always count on expert advice from everyone here! I love Dave's Garden!

This year's cool weather has been good for growing peas, at least.

You are welcome, Hill. I used to pick tiny peas too until I read about the rattle.

Some of us prefer our peas small and sweet and aren't happy to see the fat ones filling the pods. But the methods of distinguishing them are the same.
