How do you know when carrots are ready to harvest?

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

They were planted from seed end of May. I know they are not ready yet and staring at them doesn't help. Staring at the tomatoes doesn't work either...

The only way I know how is to pull 'em. Try a few and see if they are the size you like.... If not, leave the rest. Perhaps there is a more scientific way......

Bolino & Hillabeans,
Use your finger to gently dig into the soil (which should be very loose) and feel the shoulders of your carrot. If the diameter is the right size, pull it. If not, gently push the soil back in place and the carrot will continue to grow.

What variety are you growing? I grew Nantes Half-longs for the first time last fall. The recommendation was to pull when the diameter reached nickel size. Here's some of my harvest.

Hope this was helpful!

bolino - I know what you mean - I stare at mine too, to no avail.

As to when to pull carrots, I do what Gymgirl suggested.

Usually the shoulders start to poke out of the soil a bit. If not, you can carefully dig down a bit to check.
