Wanted: Winter Hardy Ice Plants
You got the mesa verde ones I sent you? Terra cotta colored?
LOL!!! I wondered who sent those and what for sure they were!! My others have long petals on them. Sre the ones you sent the kind that are winter hardy??
Thanks!
debbie
Yes, they certainly are. Up to zone 5 or something, north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. I guess I forgot the note, hunh? They haven't been blooming as much as they do when it's sunnier!!! I think we had the rainiest May-June on record up here.
Still looking for white, red, and yellow.
I'll take some pics of the yellow ones tomorrow.
Oh, Anne's are wonderful. but I'm not sure they'd be hardy for you.
hey Anne, do you think I could over winter yours in my house? They were SO FABULOUS the summer you sent them to me! Wanna do another trade?
I could certainly try. I had some a long time ago that were not winterhardy and didn't realize that some were. So, am trying the ones that are! Did the same thing with yuccas, agaves last fall. planted several colors and a few species and most of them did really well. I figured if they could live here through the winter in zone 7a (and it got down to -5 last winter!) then they would be ok where we are moving in zone 7b-8.
Anne's are like impatiens, they cannot take being frozen. But they are quite lovely!
Well, there's winter and then there's WINTER. Our temps only got down to about 25 and then not for very long. So mine held out fine on the floor under the arbor. But -5 I'm not so sure. And sure Carriel I'm sure we can work out something.
I think those are the ones I had long ago. Our winters are frequently below that temp. -5 is pretty unusual though.

OK, Anne, whaddya want? I have a lot of yarrow at the moment, and extra (hardy) geranium too.
Deb, I think the second pic of Anne's are hardy. I have that one under my Autumn Purple Ash and it blooms all summer long. In winter, it looks awful...but it comes back in late spring and looks pretty good. I have that one and a yellow which blooms in spring--and stops about the time the fuschia one begins to bloom. Both are hardy to our zone 5.
If you want to trade for either or both of these, I could send a pretty generous amt. (Note that these root rapidly if just dug into some decent soil, so you can cover more area if you cut length and plant rooted beside unrooted plants). Anyway, if you are interested--whatcha got available for trade? ;)

I rather think that both of these and the yellow that I still don't have pictures of (they never in bloom when I have time for pictures) are the same thing. Last name cooperii, delosperma I think. Of course the coldest it got here last winter was 26 and then not for very long. These were with some other things that I left out with Christmas lights during the coldest. I took a picture of the lavender one today for Barb. I still don't know what it is. The bloom is no larger than a fingernail.
If the flowers are about pinky fingernail size. Then yes and mine stayed outside last winter. I keep them in baskets that I just sat on the porch under the arbor. So they were a little protected. So what kind are yours?
Would love the red ones can always try. Saw the terra cotta ones at the nursey near where we are moving when I stopped by yesterday!! Loved them!!! Found out that our new growing zone will be closer to 8 instead of the 7a-7b here so I may have to do a little re-thinging on some of the shrubs I bought last fall.
Started the landscaping this am and going back to start that again in a bit. Currently about 7 1/2 hrs away from home....hope I get a chance to at least go to the park and walk down the beach at least for a few minutes while i am here this time!!! :)
