Well.. I start most of my seeds in Feburary.. and a few later as they arrive..o cne of my last batch wasfro Tony in Denmark..the author of the fine e-book on Brugansias.. with lots of information.. packed with scores of large tree brug pictures.. in their native local..
SO .. I sprouted these seeds...and got 2 of 5 to sprout out... not bad...after a onth or two.. in cleaning up the inside growing area...I took down the sprouting terrarium... the lifeless pots... I take and place the by typeof seed.. and place the soil inagigantic saucer...with plastic veneetian blind material enclosing each type of seed.. and then I include the naetags fro the pots inside the corral of plastic... and then I place the large saucer outside... under the drip of alarge planter on the roof....a while back I started getting two sprouts out of the Rubline X Vickies Vision corraledarea...as marked by the tags from the small pots.. and here they are... months late... but non the less welcome..
One of these plant from this interesting cross will be givento the first Brug visitor
Seed sprouting with extended time
Now that's a interesting cross how big are the one's that sprouted earlier?
I sure would like to be stopping by : )
Brom... oh the ones that sprouted first.. are about 14" tall.. where these are about 4" now... they have spent about three months .. with no action going on.. I'mso glad I figured out a way of keeping them going.. with out the piles of little no action pots.. and having to attend to them... they are watered from the runoff... and it's effortless to continue watching ..
OH..Kim.. you have been threatening for awhile now... in another few weeks many more will be flowering in full abandon.. only about 4 flowering toonight... with maybe 1-2 dozen flowers total.. soon there will be that many flowers on dozens of them...
I'd have pictures... but the laptop where the pictures go through... has it's backlit screen... and is not backlighting.. so I can work on white pages... .. if I front light it some
I started taking my unsprouted seeds w/ soil and putting them in the same pots with my large brugs. I spread it out and make sure the remaining seeds are covered. Then I place the name tags in the pot with the large plant which indicates they are seeds and wait. I have had several sprout this way.
I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off waiting until late, late summer or early fall to start my seeds. I planted 3 of those Park's BioDome seed starters indoors the last week of May. Almost all of the seed germinated, but since I'm a little cramped for space in the house, I put the domed seed starters out in the greenhouse. A grasshopper got through the air vent into one dome . It had an expensive dinner. All 60 little seedlings were gone by the following day. Those were the seed I had bought from Volker Sanders. I tried to protect the other seedlings from grasshoppers. Instead I baked them to death. Only 1 seedling survived. That's one tough little guy!
Have my first Burg seeds - the double yellow seeds are browning and falling apart on the vine - do I take them off when still green? Also have double purple and their seeds have not started to brown - do they need to come off the plant now and dry or be planted? Help - so thrilled to have seeds and will share - but please help me send and plant viable seeds. TIA
bwhite, You must have Datura plants as there are no purple Brugs. Are the seed pods roundish and spiky? The shape of the pod varies depending on the species, but they all have spiky or thorny protrusions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Datura_wrightii_seed_pods.jpg

Brugmansia seed pods tend to be elongated and smooth skinned.
I've never grown Daturas, but I'm assuming that as long as the pod stems are yellowish going on brown, they are ripe. If the pods dry out, they will explode releasing the seed everywhere.
