I purchased a grafted tree (from a good grower), but it didn't survive the winter in the greenhouse for some reason - it shriveled and eventually rotted. Last time I looked, though, the root stock was still solid, so it occurred to me - can I cut the graft off and save the bottom?

Kathleen, sorry about your loss! You can definitely cut the scion off and save the bottom root stock. If there are nodes, branches will sprout. If you got a grafted variety from FCN, I think they use seedlings as their root stock so it could end up being a white when it blooms for you, but you never know!
Done! Root stock looks good and there are a couple of nodes - if I'm identifying them correctly - both at the top and partway down. Yes, it was FCN - a Hilo Red. Thanks, Clare!
