I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to make life easier for chickens when moving from one climate to another. I'm going back to school, and so will soon be moving from the foggy Bay Area to Davis where it often get up to the hundreds. I'm sure it doesn't help that I will be moving them during the hottest time of year. I'm planning to put their new coop in a shady sheltered area, but I'm pretty concerned that the sudden more from 75 degrees to 100 degrees will be very hard on them, particularly my Black Jersey Giant. Any thoughts or ideas on how to make the transition easier? I very much appreciate it.
Thoughts on Chicken Relocation
Hi Myrrh! Congratulations on going back to school!
I keep the coop in deep shade--you can also cover the run with shade cloth from the hardware store. Then I use one of those stand up misters--about $12 at Lowe's or OSH. Since the air is pretty dry in the Central Valley the evaporation really cools things off.
I have black Jersey Giants and we have been having close to100 degrees and high humidity since the beginning of June. They pant but so do all the others. No other ill effects. It got hot quite suddenly, but not as suddenly as yours will experience. I do keep a fan going in the coop, and they have plenty of shade.
I have noticed my chickens panting lately, I feel bad for them and have looked into adding electrolytes in the water for them. They have shade and places to hide to get out of the sun.
I think electrolytes are more important for animals that sweat; I don't know whether they would be of any help to hot chickens.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll get shade cloth and try a mister. Hopefully that will help minimize the trauma. Anything for my ladies you know.....
